You Are What You Eat (Maybe off topic?)

Has anyone caught this show? Where obesely fat people are coached/harranged by Dr. Gillian McKeith?
The only problem I have with it is that I'm pretty sure that "Dr." Gillian McKeith isn't a medical doctor, despite the impression the program gives. From the b*ll*cks she spouts I'm convinced she's either a New Age Doctor of Harmony, or a Doctor of Theology that's found a lucrative niche.
Taking a morbidly obese person eating 5000 calories a day, and making them eat a balanced (though faddy/tree huggerish) diet of about 1500 calories a day, and then being AMAZED when they lose weight and feel better after 8 weeks seems to me like the easiest money-earner going....
And WHY THE HELL do they have to have colonic irrigations on TV while I'm eating????

I have seen this alright, ai takes a genius to point out that not eating lard and doing a bit of excercise will make you skinny, err just as well these genii pass these things on to use mere mortals.

Well, can I confirm that SHE'S A NUTTER! Me and Sair went and paid £12 for the book....cos the TV show intrigued us.

BAD CHOICE....NUTTER ALERT. There is some good stuff in there...but then there is some good stuff in a Biology A level book.

Shall I tell you how the book starts? Shall I?

When she was younger, our Dr woman was in love with a yank, who was into alternative medicene and health food. On her birthday , he drove her 6 hours acorss America for a suprise lunch.

It turned out to be a Macrobiotic Lunch, where the guest speaker was someone who had been Diagnosed with a case of monster cancer, allegedly 2 weeks to live, and who's friend spoon fed them macro biotic foods and stuff from a juicer and she got better...

and guess what....the doctors still can't explain it!

No......no way.....new story...never EVER heard of that before. Someone goes to a seminar, doesn't know why, or waht its about, and gets brainstormed by a good speaker!

    Miracle

So be warned....the book includes usefull advice like "dance for 20 minutes a day" and "dont drink water 1/2 an hour before or after a meal so the stomach acid works properly"

All good advice...if you live at home, write books for aliving and do sod all else.

Guess which reader is NOT impressed ?

My wife went and bought the book much to my annoyance. She's lending it to her nan though, so luckily I shouldn't have to put up with too much nonsense. It's annoying, I'm clearly as knowledgeable about diets and nutrition as most TV 'experts' but she won't believe anything until she's read it in a book.

In fairness, it's a fairly amusing program, although I agree that the colonics don't need to be shown in such close up detail.

mate....that book has as much about them as the telly show...

the woman LOVES them. As far as I was aware, they're a minor hazard in themselves.

Toxic Shock Syndrome has been known from having a bath of water pumped up your jacksie

    But onward and upward....

hey...we could call her new show...

I was quite disappointed with the book too... but there ARE some useful and intersting things in it... things that deep down we probably knew, but it does help to be reminded every now and then.
(Although I do agree that there is a lot of new age / tree hugging things in it too, but hey... don't knock it til you've tried it! IF you want to...!!!)

I think the TV show works on the "shock factor" of seeing all the food you have eaten in the week piled on a table. It did make me think "...crikey... what would MY food intake for the week look like?" and since then I have been eating more fruit and less white bread etc. I KNEW that I should already, but sometimes it needs something like that TV show to point it out again.

Obesity is becoming such an issue in this country, there are some VERY ignorant people about, and whether "You Are What You Eat" is entirely true or scientific, I hope that it will make people think twice about feeding their children burgers and chips every day, and make people realise that eating a ready meal every night really isn't very good for you....

I bought the book because I was interested in what she had to say, because EVERYONE is talking about it, and as I work in the food industry, the general opinion of consumers is something that I need to bear in mind. I certainly don't intend to follow it to the letter, but I have made note of a few things....

    ...and Pumpkin Seeds ARE yummy!

I've had a lot of sobering thoughts in my time.... It was them that started me drinking.

Did a quick search - I think she's a Dr. of Philosophy - NOT a Doctor of Medicine.
Also I think she was on Ready Steady Cook once spouting the same "Sunflower seeds cure colonic cancer" crap
Ainsley H licked her ass of course

Yeah, but you can get a DPhil in lots of subjects remember, including stuff like Biology I should think. My Mum has an MA (or Master of Arts) in Physics.

One thing i've learned from the program is that too much white bread and yeasty foods (even things you dont expect there to be yeast in) gives you thrush :S I personally, dont eat a lot of bread, i never really have, just maybe once a week with a pasta dish to soak up excess sauce, but my bf eats TONS of white bread and processed ham every week, it's practically the only thing he eats unless i cook something else, and it worries me. He's skinny tho, very skinny, but that's not an indication of what all that crap is doing to his body :S

I also agree that there's no need to a) show colonics on tv in such detail, and b) talk about people's poo in such great discription and detail! i mean PLEASE!

My wife is a good cook and is keen on eating properly so nowadays I eat pleanty of salad and veg and a generally balanced diet. When I lived on my own I ate some right rubbish though, for ages I practically lived on pop-tarts, corn flakes, bran flakes, peanut butter sandwiches and milk. I have never noticed any correlation between my diet and my general health, I'm no fitter now than I was then. If he's healthy, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

That's the problem I have with this program - Thrush is a yeast infection, bread is made with yeast therefore bread causes thrush....
Same as - The Sun is hot, my oven is hot, therefore my oven is the Sun.
Nappy rash and athletes foot are also yeast infections. Our bodies are naturally covered in yeast, but it only gets to be a problem when it thrives out of control in dark, warm, damp places. Bread has nothing to do with it. Beer is made with yeast too, I'm waiting for her to say "Beer causes nappy rash"

Yay to the dirty unwashed scum

Nah, seriously. I read recently, I think it was in the mail, that this 'media whoore' had bought her Phd (or whatever) from a dubious American college. Now that said, if Miss "I cured fat Brian from westlife" has made us look at our diets, then full marks.

As a full subscriber to the 'abhorration that is Iceland - all who eat chicken nuggets should die'' school of thought, then I applaude her. As Sair said, the 'table of doom' is fantastic! She might be a flake, but anything to get people thinking about the absolute c**p (chemical cocktail) they feed their bodies is ok in my book. But I still don't like her.

    Erm, just my 2p
