    Saucepans for Gas?

Just moved into a new flat with a gas hob and I've never had a gas hob before.

The saucepans that came with the flat are rather dirty, crappy and battered aluminium jobs and I was thinking of getting a couple of new ones so does anyone know what is the best kind of (relatively cheap) saucepan to use with gas.

Any that have the little gas symbol on the box.

I use the these... Not really cheap, but bloomin solid for what they cost.

    I'd go with that.

Tefal, of any price, are the finest for most people.

Use wooden or plastic spatulas, not metal, and they will last many years.

Aluminium is actually a good heat spreader, s the weight is NOT NECESSARILY a sign of a good pan, but it MUST MUST be rigid. Dont buy flimsy....if it buckles in the heat, fat goes everywhere.

Gas is better...by miles...that electric. It doesnt smoke its clean and its easy to adjust heat

If you get one pan, I'd get a large frying pan with deep sides and a glass lid. Its ideal for most anything. The lid keeps the steam in for gentle stuff.

If you can get two, then one fryer and one large sauce pan. If three then one fryer, one large saucepan one small sauce pan.

Tefal is ok for detergent, so washing up is fine.

    Keep us posted matey

    and DONT BUY UNBRANDED CACK.....its...er....CACK

Ah well thats me saying goodbye to any delusions of sorting this out cheaply . Ive already spent a load on getting a new Stainless kettle and toaster some new cutlery and a cafetiere for this place. Its a nice place but the cutlery/crockery kettle etc is crap

Yeah I'll check out the Tefal stuff. I defo need a nice frypan as I havent got one at all at the mo .

Also need a decent knife (again dont want to spend too much so I will be happy with one good one). Any ideas?

Thanks for the help so far guys.

It's not as expensive as you might think. We got a whole set of 5 pans +fryer for < £50. Admittedly it was an offer, but if you keep your eyes peeled.

Debenhams quite often have deals on pan sets. Dunno if you got Debs over there though

Yeah thats decent enough price. No Debenhams in Cork yet though I think one is opening in a few months time . Roches stores and Brown Thomas probably have similar stuff though.

Argos do some stuff like that i'll have a look at their catalogue this evening.

    Argos is a good idea.

Knives....dont spend lots, just get one thick cooks knife...the long, big sort. Then a sharpening thing (forgotten the name).

Lots of snobby value to knives......but you have to sharpen it either way. BUT one thing to avoid....the knives that are ultra thin and bendy AND the ones sharpened just on one side...they cut squiify al the time. A knife should be sharpened from BOTH SIDES so it cuts straight down

DONT GET A GLASS CHOPPING BOARD>...bloody things, horrible, ruin the knife. There are some cheapo ones made of plastic and you can get 2 or 3 for a few quid and swap them about for fish, meat etc.

I love kitchen stuff...does it show?

dsont buy knives in Argos cos you cant have a good feel you need a shop or department store for those. But a tenner will cover it. 1 biggun and 1 little vegetable parer.

Another vote for Tefal. We got a load for a wedding present- blimmin brilliant, and so easy to clean afterwards too.

We haven't got gas though, and I wish we did, our cooker is total ****e.

Yeah Zak that set you posted is damn good value here as well 45 euro or something. Argos have a good range of Tefal stuff so I might go for silver colour Tefal stuff. Slighty more expensive but it I think it looks nicer

Thanks for the tips on the knives. Will wonder around the dept store and see what they have I have a knife sharpner already.
