Ingredients: Do you get what you THINK you get

When you shop, if you care about what you put in your body, which I am starting to recently, you read labels.

Abd you expect to know whats in the product....down to the last chemical.

    Right?

Well, who would be suprised to find out that if a product is made "fresh on site" within 4 hours, the selling company DOESN'T have to list any of the additives, preservatives or colourings?

Pret a Manger please step forward, kneel down in front of me and tell me you are SORRY.

Cos for YEARS I have thought of you as the main boys...the ones who make the best stuff, who sell packets of crisps made from other root vegetables other than spuds, who sell nice smoothies, and good coffee...

AND WHO SELLS WHOLESOME, HEALTHY SARNIES.

It transpires that if you go to a supermarket and buy a bargain economy sarnie in a packet, it HAS TO LIST ALL THE CHEMICALS but while Pret DOES USE CHEMICALS it doesn't have to list them!

    Gutted....truly awefull

Surely that's WORSE! In a lot of ways I would rather know exactly what is in my sandwich, and then I can decide whether I want to eat it or not.

Retailers are VERY conscious of the additives that they put onto their labels, and therefore avoid additives wherever possible so that they don't put off potential customers.
Some even have lists of additives that they as a company, do not allow as they feel that they are unnecessary or have been known to cause hyperactivity etc, and challenge suppliers to reduce additives wherever possible.

Therefore, if someone is not required by law to have an ingredient declaration (Prêt or any other "made in front of you" sandwich retailer), why would they bother to reduce the number? If you aren't going to know then why put in the effort and expense to reduce them?

Prêt are probably better than most as they claim that they "AVOID" using additives etc, but that DOESN'T mean that there aren't any. But at least they try. XYZ sandwich bar around the corner probably won't.

It's actually quite difficult to find a mayonnaise, or a wafer thin ham etc without additives. Especially low fat products - they tend to be the worst!

Besides.... although some e-numbers have been found to be dangerous and banned, and obviously fresh and natural IS best.... not ALL e-numbers are bad things.
For example, Vitamin C ... friendly? It is also known as Ascorbic Acid, or E300 and is used as an antioxidant to help prevent food deterioration.

    E-Numbers list here

Oh... and good old "621", Monosodium Glutamate, MSG, a flavour enhancer in SO many things (including the Marmite crisps I have next to me!!!) is known to be toxic. Funny old world eh?!

....and therefore having things labelled would help, right?

If they have nothing to hide, then why not list it all on a label??

heh sorry guys but i disagree on this one, if i was to worry about everything i ate i'd die very young indeed, I eat what i like and leave what i don't like. Sure you probably look at me and go strange attitude for someone who doesn't tend to eat green vegtables. but its the truth.

I take my health very seriously but believe that exercise combined with a semi sensible diet is better than worrying about every little thing i put in my mouth.

TiG is right.... if additives were going to kill you, they wouldn't be allowed (in this country), and ANYTHING in excess doesn't do you much good.
If you lived on 100% butter with NO additives at all, you wouldn't feel too good!!

Although what makes me annoyed is that people are MISLEAD... I know for a fact that most consumers believe that a Pret Sandwich is better for them than a pre-packed one because it doesn't have any e-numbers listed. It MAY be... but it may not.

OK... I'll stop going on now!!!

There seems to be a lot of it about at the moment! And a lot more people with food intollerances.
Personally I think a varied, sensible diet would help most people, but I do know a few with IBS who take Digestive Enzymes (Acidophilus) and say that it helps!

Hold tight mate, within five years they'll probably have most ibs nailed, interesting (if slightly gross) cure...

This is all a little second hand from my GF who studies immunology (I'm a plant biologist and computer nerd, so this may have errors in it) but ibs is essentially an overresponse from the immune system to various foods, similar mechanism to alergies I think.

So what this researcher has done is feed people with ibs some live pig pin-worm eggs (gross I know, but don't worry). Obviously your immune system kicks into action to repel these parasites, which stops it from going nuts over the food you're eating. And you can't even catch the pin-worms becasue the pig variety is incapable of infecting humans.

It's in clinical trial at the moment and having loads of success, something like 80% of peeps have no simptoms for six months, not bad eh?

I can check the details with my better half if this all sounds a little too sketcy, also sorry for raising the yuk factor so high in the hotpot forum.
They told me I was gullible ... and I believed them.

Over the last 2 years I have come to understand more about food and energy/mood swings/headaches etc.

    You'll see....trust me
