Beer - to get your excited

I love alcohol. Its no secret. But what I love dearly is Red Wine, and Beer.

I enjoy whisky sometimes, gin and tonic occassionaly, but on the whole Red Wine and Beer.

Very few beers really get me .....moist . But some do.

and I have to know. Do any of you get really REALLY excited at the thought of good beer?

I don't mean look forward to it,like most people look forward to a cold one on a hot day.

I mean REALLY excited.....like its a once-in-a-year thing, kinda like Christmas. I do.

It's called Mac Lir and only my good good friend Tumble can get me it .

    Tumble...can I marry you please ?

I can't say I get REALLY excited about a particular beer... Very excited about beer in general... Especially sometimes... But there are a few that I hunt out:

    Light stuff:

Landlord (Timothy Taylor). Nice light beer.

Golden Glory (Badger). Bloody girly but I defy you to taste it and not like it.

Fursty Ferret (also Badger). Nice light beer.

    Heavier stuff:

Black Sheep. (AKA Baa Noir). USED to be really hard to get hold of down south.

Oyster Stout (Youngs IIRC - though there are others out there). It IS as odd as it sounds but it's nice never the less.

On the same score - Old Engine Oil (Harviestoun). Or Double Chocolate Stout (Youngs again IIRC). Same as the oyster stout. Odd and you'd only have a couple when you were in the mood. Nothing you could drink all night. But nice all the same.

    On the rager front:

    Corona. With lime in.

Red Stripe... But not anymore cuz it's brewed over here and nowhere near as good as the proper stuff.

I get excited about my local brew back in belgium...it's brewed in my village for our beer festival once a year. marked as 8% but thats a rather conservative estimate. But its also ridiculously light, and is the kind of beer you can sit down with all day & night long. Kind of a dangerous combo, and is always amusing seeing people who haven't tried it before underestimate it

if its a boiling hot day, i'm stressed and i happen to glance out my window at the pub opposite (i'm a jammy git ), i'll be dashing over there and demanding a pint of stella. a beer on a summers day is something to look forward to IMO. then again, its equally as good any other day

A dont know why but the same beer can vary enormously between locations. It may have something to do with the way it is kept, but I think more to do with mood and situation. So....

Greene King IPA (my local brew) in the Yacht clubhouse after a race is nectar. In many other places its poor.

Theakstons Old Peculiar draught...I mean proper draught, not that foamy soapy excuse for beer called draughtflow that ouses out of cans - at the Hikers bar at back of Scafell Hotel Borrowdale Lake District after a long hike.

Adnams Best Bitter in Swan Hotel Southwold (backs onto brewery) after fish and chips from local chippy.

Or if I am at home and the barby is going, then Pilsner Urquell, Tiger Beer or Budweiser Budvar quenches the thirst and excites the tastebuds supremely.

I'm in the happy position of having done a booze cruise recently, so I have some Pelforth Brune in the house. I limit myself to a bottle a day cos (by French beer standards) it's so expensive, but damn I enjoy it! I should really buy more next time, only got 24 bottles this time. When you think about it £4.50 for 12 bottles is very reasonable, it just seems a lot when you can get 30 bottles of St Omer for £4 from the same Hypermarket.

oh that sounds like HEAVEN.... a ber festival with local beer for the occasion

Clingy hits the nail, on the head, as he often does. Atmosphere and quality of the cellar man. Tetelys and Guiness are two of the most abused beers in England...a bad pint of Tetley will ruin your entire night but 7 or 8 good ones and you'll be fresh as a daisy day after.

    Tumble......you git

I just love youngs beer in general! You can't beat a pint of special at any time or waggledance in the summer. Also their own brew lager is really nice. I also recommend going to the brewery for a tour. When I came back i was so drunk the missus wouldn't talk to me. Not that I was able to talk anyway!

The only Youngs pub near me is expensive and run by a complete misery guts, and so the only time it's ever busy is when a football match is on. Usually the atmosphere is pretty funereal. It's a shame because as menthel says youngs beer (both lager and bitter) is good stuff- although I'd contend that Fuller's Honeydew is the tastier honey beer, albeit that it doesn't have such a comedy name.

Get on some public transport and come to either wandsworth (where the brewery is) or wimbledon and you will find reasonable and well kept youngs. Delicious!
