    What are your healthy alternatives?

With the current focus on healthier diets, we are all getting more conscious of what we eat. Take chips, we all love 'em. And we all know they are bad. So instead of chips I now do these...

For 2 people I use 3-4 largeish spuds. 'Reds' work quite well with this.

Peel spuds (This is optional - if not peeling though, wash well ).

Cut into wedges, about the size and weight of a normal chip.
HINT - For best results cut spud in half, place flat side down. Then, starting from 2cm above chopping board, cut in and down so the knife meets the board halfway through the spud. Repeat so the knife again finishes at same point.

Wash 'em in water, then dry on a clean tea-towel. (Important bit this!)

Now place into a large mixing bowl.

Add extra virgin olive oil. (A little at a time and toss well - You want the wedges to be lightly but evenly coated in oil.)

Add salt and pepper to taste. Garlic salt can make an interesting alternative

Now spread out on a large baking tray and cook in oven (Gas Mark 6) for around 35-45 minutes. Turning once halfway through. HINT - To see if their done... Eat one

These are yummy, and a lot healthier than deep frying. Anyone got any others?

I do the same sort of thing, except I use a mix of piri-piri, cajun spice and paprika.

Smoked paprika, parmesan cheese and fresh oregano works well too.

I've even done them with one of those packet mix spice things for tacos, yum!

The packets of powder you can get for wedges for 50-70p are pretty good TBH, but I've made some delicious ones by crushing a couple of cloves of garlic and adding a pinch of salt and a random selection of herbs, then coating the wedges with a bit of oil and the garlic herb mix.

As for healthy alternatives though, I rarely bother. I stay slim by simply not eating too much.

    My healthy alternatives.......

    Throw away Deep Fat Fryer!!!

When Im cooking at home the unhealthiest thing I probably do is shallow fry meat in olive oil!
I also use my 'George' where possible - Bacon tastes yummy on it.

I dont always eat healthy, I eat what I like - but what I like usually contains lots of meat and veggies and usually tastes yummy!! (even if I say so myself!)

Not got a 'George', but have a nice two hob cast iron griddle instead . And IMO you can't meat cooked on it.

And with you on frying in olive oil . The only time I use vegetable oil now is in the wok, due to the higher temps. Not only is olive oil slightly better for you, but the kitchen smells a lot more appetising in that 'After Fry' smell

I'm sorry, but as as an Indian I couldn't cook some things without ghee, however unhealthy it is. However I do try & use Olive or veg oil wherever possible but some things just tase better with a bit of fat.

Ghee is a type of clarified butter, used in Indian cookery. It can be heated to high temps withouyt burning and is pretty much essential to get some of those seriously tasty dishes right... but you're right DRI, it ain't healthy!
