Where can I find Pistachio Ice Cream?

    Hi all,

Bit of an odd one but I was just munching on some pistachios and it brought memories of Ice Cream I had in the states so now I'm craving it but no one seems to make it here. Or nowhere I can find at least. It seems Waitrose used to have some but no longer. Tesco might stock Pistachio Magnums, which I'll try, but I was really after a carton of the good stuff.
Anyone have any leads for someplace in the Glasgow area that sells it?

Re: Where can I find Pistachio Ice Cream?

Waitrose have stopped doing pistachio Though the one I got from there was the too smooth for me Italian gelato - like some texture me.
I have noticed that it is more difficult to acquire pistachio - either it's not stocked at all, or it's the one that's run out.
I now have the idea implanted in my head to find some pistachio ice cream in Leicester and will probably annoy a lot of cafes in my requests.
    Good luck in your quest.

If you go to one of those Indian fruit and veg shops with a freezer cabinet, you should be able to find some Pistachio Kulfi, which is Indian ice cream, and that happens to be my favorite flavor.

Re: Where can I find Pistachio Ice Cream?

I have tried pistachio kulfi, but really didn't enjoy it. As for the ice-cream, I've tasted a lot of chemical-esque varieties from supermarkets and the like that have been terrible.

The only time I really enjoy it is when it's from an actual ice-cream shop. And no great shock that we don't have many of those in the UK!

Haha sorry I've put the bug in your head. I've been told by a friend that he knows a place here over on the southside of Glasgow so I'll give that a try.
There are a few Ice Cream parlours around but not too many have this flavour at the moment.
I'd have had more luck in the summer I think when they stocked more flavours.

Thanks for the tips - I'll have a look at that Ocado link

Re: Where can I find Pistachio Ice Cream?

    You could make your own.

I've done an 'ice cream' (that isn't, actually), in a (very heavy duty) blender. It's basically pistachios, banana, avocado, vanilla extract, and honey (or dates). I know, sounds weird, but you get the texture of ice cream from the banana and avocado, the colour from the avocado, and the pistachio flavour from, well, pistachios.

There's probably a lot of faces being pulled right now at that ingredient list right now, but anyone used to making smoothies or ice-cream will tell you that you'd be astonished what you can put in that people would never know was there. I've got a raspberry sorbet in the freezer right now which included a carrot and some cabbage and a little spinach and I defy anyone to notice them in the taste.

That does, however, require an expensive blender. You might get away with smaller, cheaper ones like Nutribullet, buf never having tried one, I can't say.

My version, I would point out, takes about 30 seconds in the blender, but the avocado, banana, etc, do need to be frozen first, so need a few hours 'prep' (skin the banana and freeze it, halve and destone the avocado and freeze, etc). Total effort, probably 3 mins but a few hours to freeze, so plan a bit in advance. That said, I've always got banana, pineapple, raspberries, strawberries, etc in the feeezer ready to go anyway, so for me, total time = about 3 minutes from getting the urge.

Or, alternatively, you can get an ice-cream maker for about £30-ish (pre-frozen container type) and if so, there's a Pistachio Ice Cream recipe on Delia online that's "proper" ice cream, replete with loads of whipped cream, single cream, etc.

Thanks for the tips! I have a very small kitchen so I don't think the making my own is practical now but I'll keep it in mind for the future

I found the Pistachio Magnums in Tesco, gonna try one later today

Re: Where can I find Pistachio Ice Cream?

Space isn't really the issue, unless you're extremely tight for it. The Nutribullet doesn't take up much more counter space space than a coffee mug, and the smaller ice-cream makers aren't much bigger than a kettle, though the self-freezing ones are. And, they don't have to be left out.

More of an issue is the cost, which isn't likely to be worth it unless you'ree using the Nutribullet (let alone a high-end blender) for a lot of other things too (I do) and the ice-cream maker, even at £40 let alone the £240 end of the market, implies you'll be making a lot of ice-cream.

    It was just a thought.

You make a good point. To be fair I've always wanted to try making my own ice cream so I am tempted. I have a habit of impulse buying stuff after convincing myself I'd use them but then I rarely do - examples would be a popcorn maker, Wok, rowing machine, George Foreman Grill and various tech items such as a Black Widow joystick. I'm currently trying to talk myself out of buying a new GFX card or laptop - neither of which I need lol

I did used to use a blender in my old place for smoothies etc so I could use it for tha- damn you Saracen now I'll probably end up buying another toy! haha

Well, I use mine for smoothies, but also to make quick soups, pasta sauces, pesto, peanut butter, ice cream and sorbets, and so on.
