Just add boiling water: what are the best foods for outdoor life?

With the exeption of sausages on sticks over bonfires

What are the best quality, pre packed and probably ready potted foods that just need boiling water added?

Pot Noodle (minus the sachet of crap) are value and portable for instant carbs
Mug Shot pasta not too bad though full off rubbish too.

Do you have any suggestions please?

Get over to a chinese supermarket and grab some of the Korean Kimchee noodles - orders of magnitude better than pot nootle.

When ever I cross the channel I always bring back a few tins of cassoulet - they seem to do "beans and meat in a tin" much better than in the UK.

The polish Isle in the supermarket has a good line in some of their stews , just warm up in a bain marie , then use the rest for tea

I remember going through a "pot mash" phase many years ago. Like pot noodles but mashed potato. Good for carbs and a bit more compact as they don't need to package the air-space. The cheap ones can taste foul though, and probably contain more chemicals and cardboard than actual spuds.

1 box = 24 hrs worth of food, but with most contents either eaten cold or geared around being surounded by meltable snow.

In fact, the 24hr Rat Packs are generally regarded as the best in the world.
Downsides are finding them these days (your Google-Fu will be tested) and at decent prices. You could once get boxes for a quid each, though I've seen them as high as £20.
If you can find them cheaper than the equivalent ensemble in the Wayfarer style civvy versions from camping shops, you're doing well.

Boil in the bag rice - pasta has already been mentioned. Places like Cotswold outdoors and Go Outdors have a range of dehydrated foods for trekkers - but they are relatively expensive. Beef jerky is another good standby.

But if you have outdoor cooking facilities, whether its an open fire, some form of contained woodburner, or portable gas, you can cook pretty much anything - so long as you can keep it fresh. It depends on how long you intend to be out. But for an overnight camp, there is nothing to beat fried smoky bacon in a pan over on open fire - and when the bacon is done, chuck in a can of beans. Your main problem may be getting water if you are really out in the wilds - and water is heavy to carry.

Not so much "add boiling water" but I like the tins of pasta salad you get in the tinned food isle. The Tesco own brand ones seem pretty good value and are full of tuna and muxed beans without any pasta etc. bulking them up.

that does it for free with twigs, no gas



and yes.. it really does work! I have one and have used it twice.. it burns like a rocket engine ......on twigs!!

the burner section at the bottom turns upside down and slides up into the kettle when you carry it.. that's also the biggest one they make I've linked too
