Eh, I strongly suspect it won't taste as good as the Boca burger at Johnny Rockets (who've been doing a vegan burger for decades now).

I can see it working in some countries. Can't see many Brits going for it though - most non-vegan brits seem to be pathologically opposed to eating anything that isn't cut off a dead animal, while most vegan brits wouldn't go in a McDonalds on principle!

And as always, shop local and you'll find better vegan food (there's a pub just down the road from us who brew their own Vegan beer as well as having a completely vegan menu!).

It's more that most of it is utter tasteless junk. It's a bit annoying when you love a veggie.

This is part of what tickles me about it. It's like McDonalds are thinking, "I wonder how we can get in on this lucrative vegan movement", or that vegans are thinking "I really wish I could go and get a McDonalds, but they just don't have anything for me in the menu"

There may well be moral, environmental, and ethical benefits to veganism, but you can be damn sure McDonalds will leave a trail of destruction in their path to source ingredients one way or another.

I don't see any ethical or moral problems eating meat provided it is reared appropriately. And I would rather have the health benefits of eating meat. Isn't the real issue overpopulation? Instead of pussy footing around trying to worry about the outworkings of that we ought to be taking a global initiative to promote birth control, health vaccinations, and raise education standards in developing (and developed) countries to help limit family sizes and reign-in population expansion. When you meet a militant vegan harping on about moral obligations to the planet ask them how many children they have. When they say things like "5, we don't believe in birth control" you have to question whether they really care about the planet at all.

This is basically my current feelings on the matter, but its far easier to source vegan ingredients (which you can make a reasonable presumption of responsibility) than it is responsibly sourced meat. This is why I state, "there may well be" rather than, "there is"

There is an issue with responsible sourcing whether its meat or plants, as both can cause long lasting damage depending on the methods and scale, of course.

I honestly didn't start this thread to bash Vegans. I have a good giggle at their group-think expense from time to time just like anyone, but Its McDonalds which are the ones to laugh at here.

But that still comes down to the fact that the planet is overpopulated.

The weird thing is Veganism is not really viable outside an industrial society unlike being a Vegetarian, and AFAIK the former is a relatively new invention from the 19th century onwards.

More a case most places making vegetarian food seem to make it taste like animal fodder.

However,in certain parts of the world its been quite common for centuries and some of its really nice to eat.

That I can totally get behind; even though I'm no longer vegan I still like being able to get veggie/vegan food when I'm out occasionally. But a lot of it is half-assed and tasteless, which I find really frustrating, given I know how easy it is to make delicious vegan food...

It's not exactly "now" - scientists have been saying that for decades. It was the reason I went vegan originally. It was even a question on QI [i]many[i/] years ago.

A few years ago a couple of my favourite staples had their recipes changed to include whey powder, and I had to balance eating UK reared and processed meat against importing frozen goods from South Africa. Now I tend to aim for LOAF principles (i.e. - in order of importance - Local, Organic, Animal-friendly, Fairtrade). I still eat veggie/vegan a lot of the time though. But even a vegan burger wouldn't get me in to McDonalds...

In countries like India large sections of the population actually eat more of non-meat based diet, but so much of the stuff you buy in shops, etc here is likely eating cardboard. I simply don't understand who actually does the taste testing for them, someone who actually has an aversion to any degree of flavour??

Humans have evolved to be omnivorous, Denton and digestive system are strong indications! And there is a theory that meat eating ( and cooking) gave the energy inpiput to allow brain power to develop.

That isn’t to say that we shouldn’t shift the balance towards less meat eating, but bear in mind that some essential amino acids, minerals (iron, calcium, some vitamins) etc can only be obtained from meat and dairy products, unless you start taking supplements.

It is a question of a balanced diet.

I think the issue with vegan burger would be vegans will actually be concerned about cross contamination with meat products - so not actually sure how many true vegans would go for it

In this case, that would make the veggie burger a true equivalent to the bland meat products.

The current veggie burger is *awful*, I can't comment on the meat myself as I've been veggie for over 20 years. I don't think McDonalds has ever really been targetting themselves as high end food though
