OK, I don't really like Christmas (I won't explain why here) but if you make it whats the best recipe for mulled wine?

    1. Go to Tescos
    2. Buy a packet of mulling spice
    3. Put a cheap crap bottle of red in a pan with the spice bag and warm through for five minutes
    4. Enjoy

Seconded - imho making mulled wine is destroying something perfectly good, unless the original wine was crap. Then it doesn't matter, especially as the spices will take care of discrepancies in flavour for you.

Or you can do it proper with the cone of sugar thing and proper spices.

Usually needs some sugar to sweeten it up a bit.

60p plonk is the best for it... i love mulled wine

Pretty much any French supermarket or hypermarket. If you've got to come down from up North do the job properly and take a van or estate car.

Auchan in Calais, there is some very reasonable half cases of 60p plonk there... unfortunately we have drunk our reserves from the summer... seriously considering a booze cruise at the moment!

The Carrefour at Cite Europe is our Hypermarche of choice (TBH because it's easy to find and I have no idea where Auchan is). I've just finished a bottle of Van De Pays De L'Herault which set me back something like 65p (I avoid the very cheapest 55p a bottle stuff, which is Spanish) and it's perfectly drinkable. It also mulls very well as per my earlier post.

For slightly more refined drinking (in taste, rather than labelling terms) we go for the Dog's B*llocks Range from Eastenders, which works out about £1.50 a bottle (although it was £1.25 until the autumn when they put the price up ).

P.S. Tigs, as a seasoned booze cruiser I may be teaching you to suck eggs here, but anyway: we went with SeaFrance last time. Their check in deadline is a bit earlier than some (which is a pain, we missed our outgoing ferry as a result) but for six quid in the self service restaurant they do a steak with pepper sauce and chips which is worth the trip on its own. In future, the chunnel or P&O will have to seriously undercut them on price to get our business.

We used to do the Cite Europe booze cruises, have now moved onto taking the tunnel over in the morning, going out to lunch and then off to the wine society in Montreuil:

They do some great wine at lower than normal prices yet nothing like 60p! Next trip will try and pick some cheapy up - we still go there for beer.

Saving made from going to France (rather than ordering from UK branch of Wine Society) covers lunch & travel - win win situation .
