    Bread and Free Yeast

If you go to your local supermarket, one that's big enough to have its own bakery, you can ask politely for and usually get, free live yeast. If you've never had freshly made bread you're missing out on a huge treat and of course you can even make pizza dough. The proper live yeast supposedly improves on the dried variety by giving a better rise to the dough and some say that it tastes better. Whatever, get some free yeast make some bread and look forward to that first slice hot from the oven with butter on it. There's not too much that can match it...

i was under the impression that the instore 'bakery' was really just for show, all they do is take the pre-prepaired dough (that is full of preservatives and enzimes to keep it 'fresh' for longer) or part baked loaves and bung them in the computer controlled ovens. No actual baking involved.

No they do real baking instore.

From time to time they advitise jobs or training positions, and from the spec there appears to be some serous skills & experence needed.

As for free fresh yeast, I used to do that for home made pizza dough, but switched to the dried and found it more reliable and easer to control.

I use my breadmaker to make bread! yummmm nothing beats fresh bread, i'll use it to make doughnut mix too, warm doughnuts FTW! don't see the point in faffing about with fresh yeast when dry yeast gives as good result

Today i have made 2 apple crumbles, and some shortbread not much today, usually when i decide to bake i make a little bit of everything

Most i've ever baked in one day was 2 quiches, one veggie one meat, apple pie, doughnuts, bread, cheese scones, fruit scones and and a sponge cake

Instore Bakeries do use a lot of frozen breads as well as the danishes. Muffins are just
melted doughnuts come in frozen and are just baked off.

The bread which is made from scratch uses improvers and concentrates already made up
in packets. Supermarket bakers wouldnt be able to work for someone will allied (kingsmill)
    or british (hovis) bakeries.

I use dried and it works fine. My breadmaker's only small so half a sachet will do a 500g loaf anyway, and half a sachet costs about 4p! It'll also do fine for pizza dough (which is so much easier in the breadmaker ).

Like some others have said, a lot of supermarket bread is prepared elsewhere and baked instore. Mind you, when I worked the nightshift stacking shelves in Sainsbury's (shudder), the bakers used to come in at 3 am, so they must have been doing something extra.

Speaking of doughnuts, I'm in the mood for some

Fresh bread is lovely, my dad makes it all the time (and pizza dough). Will have to figure it out how to make the stuff myself!
