    Best Tinned Tomatoes

    Hello.

I ahve been making a lot of pizzas recently. More info on them at www.pizzamaking.com.

Anyway, i have tried a few varieties of tinned toms. I am trying to make a neapolitan style pizza, not much topping, so the quality and flavour of the tomatoes is very impt.
    So far

    1. Cirio (from morrison's)
    2. La Doria (asda)
    3. Napolina (asda)

I like the cirio the best. I find napolina taste very tomatoey but not right somehow, over rocessed or something. La doria are not as tasty as cirio.
I have heard good things about la fiammante but they are hard to find i think you can only get them from delis etc.
Does anybody have any thoughts on tomatoes? I have tried amking sauce from cherry tomatoes too, but the tinned are so much easier.

Why not drain whatever you have a bit, and cook slighty with a small pinch of sugar & seasoning to taste - most tinned tomatoes should be grand if you do that.

I am cooking them with a little s&p, a little garlic fried in olive oil and some fresh basil. I am sieving them first to remove excess water.

I find those three brands are better than the supermarket own brands. If you don't taste any difference between brands just fuggedaboudit.

I can't remember the name (not at home to check) but i use sainsburys sieved tomatoes with some tomato paste added. It's like pessata, but a bit thicker and the tins are smaller, like the size of a small can of sweetcorn, with a mainly white label.

I usueally base all my tomato sauses on this.

What part of his response did you think wasn't helpful? It was a very helpful response and I was about to say something similar - you can intensify the flavour of tinned tomatoes by pre-cooking them. To that end I actually find cheap tinned tomatoes such as aldi's own or sainsburys basics the best.

Hmm, lidl actually do good italian tomatoes, but i find the own brand asda and sainsbury's very watery and not as good as italian toms.

I don't really need cooking tips for them, i just need the tastiest brand of tomatoes to put on my pizza.

Also i have tried passata for the pizza, but i prefer it to be a bit chunkier than that.

Aww, I didn't even get to see the nasty reply you made!

Bear in mind I made that post quite early with only 4 hours sleep after 8 pints and have no idea the level of cooking ability you have.

I honestly think that a bit of pre cooking with a small pinch of sugar & seasoning to taste works fine, especially if you ardding basil etc.

If you want a good tomato taste why not buy realt tomatoes, like vine tomatoes? You can blitz them easily with a food processor..

If I'm not using fresh I tend to use Napolina peeled plum tomatos - that way you can decide if you want them big chunky or little chunky, or even whole. The juice tends to be thicker as well than with tins of chopped tomatos.

I got some organic tinned plums. I think you're right that it's better to get whole tomatoes than chopped.

Hi, I have been fascinated by all this talk of lovely, plump tomatoes and would like to share my thoughts on this as it is close to my heart (well it is now) I have conducted my own research on tinned tomatoes and have tried them all.... and although I don't usually truck with the cheap store brands of anything I have found that tesco own brand (the really cheap stripey tin) are by far the tastiest and have a lovely thick sauce just right for pizza's. I have them with red onions on sausages baked in the oven and then poured over mashed pots - luvvely and far superior to even the most expensive ones...(no charge for the recipe)

totally agree with you on this, not the biggest fan of tesco but i was amazed how good some of their food products can be. And i am not saying this with price on mind i do actually feel that some are way better than the leading brands. In order to keep the costs low i would guess they dont the process the ingredients that much what causes them to be more "real".
