    RAM might work?!?!

Hi again all. been here before with a problem and i have to say you were all very helpful. managed to solve that problem thanks to you guys so thanks again.

i was wondering if you might be able to give me a little more advice. i am curently running
    Manufacturer : ASUSTek Computer Inc.
    Mainboard : Asus K8N-E-Deluxe
    Processor : AMD Athlon 64 3200+
    Frequency : 2200 MHz - (current : 2420.12 MHz)
    Bios : American Megatrends Inc.
    Chipset : nVidia nForce3 250
    Physical Memory : 3072 MB DDR-SDRAM
    OS: Vista ultimate Black

now the RAM is in 3x1gb sticks at 200mhz and 184 pin. i have left over form another new computer that i have recently built a 2x2gb sticks of 666mhz RAM and a 184 pin also. now, do you think i would be able to replace the current 200mhz RAM with the 666mhz RAM and if they are not would it damage the systems hardware. this change dose come duse to a low performance from the computer, it generally sticks on things and i feel that it is most definitely a RAM problem.

    Re: RAM might work?!?!

666mhz ram sounds like DDR2, which is a different slot/socket type than the DDR 1 you curently have installed.

so no it physically wouldn't fit in the slot, and no you cant use it.

    sorry about that.

according to the All CPU Meter gadget i have, my copy of vista doesnt use above 1.8gb of ram most of the time, i've only had it above 2gb once, and that was when i had crysis and cod4 open at the same time, while browsing HEXUS. i think you'll barely (if atall) notice any difference with an extra gb - thats if you decide to buy some more DDR 1.

oh yeah, theres some handy links in my signature, incase you want to read them.

    Re: RAM might work?!?!

What the hey is Vista ultimate black?

If it is a 32bit OS you won't be able to use the full $GB anyhow, probably 3.5GB dependant on what other devices have memory.

As Stevie says, DDR DDR2 and DDR3 are keyed differently, so you cannot use them in non compliant mobos.

A pirated custom spin if I'm not mistaken. As stevie lee said, if it fits it will work.

    Re: RAM might work?!?!

yeah ultimate black is basically ultimate with a bunch of addons. i guess my problem is that the computers spec is rather good and yet i hangs on general things lick right clicking for the drop menue and so on. hence my beleife that it was a RAM problem.

That could be a good number of things but most likely software related. Check in task manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) how much free memory you have when doing everyday tasks. Do you have a lot of background tasks running? Also do you have AV?

    Re: RAM might work?!?!

Hmm that all looks OK. I though memory might have been full so swap was being used a lot. Try running http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/ to check for malware on your system which could be impacting performance.

    Re: RAM might work?!?!

    Hey again.

thanks for all of the replys. i am as of yet unable to find a solution, perhaps i am running slower RAM or perhaps i have a craped out OS. either way there seems to be little solutions available but i thank you all very much for trying.
