In no small part, exchange rates.
There was oversupply of DDR2 RAM last year which meant lower prices.
Didn't you ask this about a month ago?
multiple reasons
Weak pound
Previous over supply
Reduced supply
Drop in demand (both lower total demand and more spread out over different chips)
near colapse of a few big memory producers (when the global markets colapsed a few of the producers nearly went under, esp the twainese, many planed production runs had to be canned)

Another reason being DDR3 becoming established in the market with both Intel & AMD using it. DDR3 production goes up and price slowly dropping and DDR2 going the other way.
And now its £80 for 4GB DDR2. 4GB DDR3 costs same price but lot of us have the C2D boards without DDR3 support!
Ridiculous prices!
I know, but with the glut on DDR2 now gone as the production has been ramped back now DDR3 has been released the prices have gone back to what they deem as normal levels.
I reckon we were lucky when we used to be able to get 4 Gb DDR2 800 Mhz memory for about 30-35 pounds.
I'm kicking myself now that I didn't get 8 Gb of memory when I had the chance![]()
The newer 775 boards, yes they are still being made, are all ddr3 now
The 2nd hand price is going crazy as well last summer I got 4x1gb OCZ reaper for £25, this week 2x2gb OCZ platnium cost me £53, I really wish I'd bought loads back when it was cheap could of doubled my money by selling it today.

That's nothing. I paid $270 USD for a 2GB OCZ DDR400 Platinum dual channel kit back in July 2005. Heck, I paid $225 USD for a 1GB OCZ DDR400 EL dual channel kit in Feb 2004. $85 USD for a 4GB DDR2-800 dual channel kit is not that bad.

you can find some decent stuff on fleabay. picked up a 2gb kit od geil ddr2 ultra not so long ago - it was only a few months old, was sent the reciept with it to prove it. and i got that for a bargin sum of £20 delivered. the same kit which i already had as i just wanted 4gb for 7, cost me about £50 about 4 years ago ( wow my original stuff is still going strong)
the reason i belive its so important is because of the global shortage of electronic components. (have a look on places like farnell or rapid, for even the basic stuff like resistors if you dont belive me)
Were coming out of recession, during which many companies reduced production etc, now the big companies arent sure if its safe enough to invest in machinery to increase production etc.

I bought a 32 gigs of all OCZ Platinum in four gig packs for £30 each last year they were on offer at Aria.
I bought them to fill my two RAM drives and then decided I didn't need the drives, low and behold when I came to sell they were selling at £70 a set so I sold them on eBay for £60 a set doubling my money very nice!.
Over the years I've seen RAM prices go up and down like a pair of hoes draws
