I'm confused...Ram options?
I would like to ultimately OC my 990x pretty hard
Please point me in the right direction...... Whats more important:- :undecided
1.5v/1.65v
latency/MHz
3x4/6x2 ( the only thing I'm sure of is I want 8 to12Gb)
Or better still fits a Corsair Airflow PRO
Sub £250
The more I read ....the more conflicting views I get, what happened to the good old days when the more low latency RAM you had the better your system worked
Re: I'm confused...Ram options?
The general consensus would be to take 3x4GB sticks, however its a different matter entirely if you will need 12GB of RAM.
Lower voltage stuff means that in theory, the sticks could have plenty of OC headroom. In addition to this, lower voltage also means less energy use and heat.
Lastly if you're going for a balls to the wall OC its likely both MHz & Latency will have to be sacrificed in comparison to what the RAM would be capable of outside of a pure pursuit of CPU speed. However, outside of benchmarking, you won't notice any difference in speeds/latencies beyond kits that are rated higher than 1600MHz @ 8-8-8-24 or thereabouts.
Re: I'm confused...Ram options?
Lower latency is still a factor to ram performance, however the difference between cas9 and cas8 is very small esp with the speed of ddr3
Back when ram was slower and latencies smaller then cas was far more important
eg going from cas2 to cas4 is a doubling of latency delay, from cas7 you'd have to go all the way up to cas14 too double the latency delay.
