Running some large simulation software would be considered processing large amounts of data.
If I wanted a gaming build, would it be desirable to have the low frequencies to make the system feel snappy?

I would definitely like to try OC to 1800~66~ish - I'm not sure, but I don't think the Mobo I'm looking at would support this?? (can't find any guides on how to correctly interpret the Mobo memory speed) Gigabyte GA-Z77-D3H

    Anyone know about that? ^
For gaming higher frequencies will be more important that low latencies. Lower latencies just means that it takes a few less milliseconds to open small files, and browse folders etc. But TBH having an SSD will make more of a difference in this respect.
You should be able to edit RAM timings etc with that mobo. I think that most, if not all, Z77 chipsets have this available.

I didnt notice at first that there's a 4GB and a 8GB kit. I'd go for the 8GB kit, thats much better value and 8GB will give you better system performance (more room for windows to cache files etc).
As ik9000 suggested, try for 1866Mhz at 10-10-10-27. Thats what im getting from my 1600Mhz rated kit.
But all-in-all RAM OCing wont make a huge difference to your system speed or FPS when gaming. From the comparisons ive seen 2800Mhz kits only get a few % more FPS than 1600Mhz kits.
If you can wait for the Jan sales you should be able to get a 8GB 1600Mhz kit for sub-£30. There isnt much difference between them, just grab whatever is cheapest.

I'd recommend Samsung 30 nm Green PC3-12800 Low Profile RAM, very cheap and I heard of people overclocking it to +2000Mhz without an issue.
