Question HP Gen 8 Microserver Help

    Hi folks,

Stupidly thought the ram I had in my HP N40L Microserver would work in my new Gen 8 Microserver. It didn't . . .

So now I need new memory. A few questions

Is it better to have 1 stick or 2? Is there any really difference in real-world performance to an HTPC/Storage server?

What ram should I look out for? I want it as cheap as possible as I wasn't expecting needing to buy this!

    Thanks for your help!

Re: HP Gen 8 Microserver Help

Having 1 or 2 wont really matter. Maximum 8 GB per slot so Id start with 1 stick of 8 so you can upgrade later.
Something like Corsair value RAM is fine.

Re: HP Gen 8 Microserver Help

I think I've read the Gen 8 only supports ECC RAM. But yeah, number of slots and clock speed are fairly unimportant in this role.

Re: HP Gen 8 Microserver Help

    You may be right
They didnt do an amazing job of iterating that on the website but looking at a spec sheet PDF it does seem to suggest ECC ram only. Secondly Crucial only lists ECC RAM as compatible. Sadly looks like you need to spend more than Value RAM on these Gen8s strange decision but its clearly to make more money. Seems stupid to only support ECC as most workstation boards support both types and just require an ECC compatible CPU to enable the ECC part of the RAM.

Re: HP Gen 8 Microserver Help

I had 2gb in mine but needed to up it. Added 8gb, it's fine.

However, I would recommend the hp ecc ram IF you can find it for a sensible price, I got mine from ebuyer I think it was, and was not much more than other ecc ram. If you don't you will get a rude message about it not being proper ha ram when you boot it up

Home server show has a lot of good info about these things

Re: HP Gen 8 Microserver Help

I put 2gb from my old N54L so now have 4GB booting nicely. As it is mainly a htpc media centre - it is more than enough so far.

May upgrade in future if it's needed.
