How to work out RAM wattage?
I'm currently building a steam machine in a Silverstone RVZ01 with a 500w 80% gold rated Psu. I've undervolted my 3770k so it runs at 1.18v load (4.3ghz)
And also undervolted my corsair vengeance lp 1600mhz (8gb) to 1.35v.
How to I work out what wattage they are using? Basically I want to put a gtx 970 (x2 6pin version) and am hoping it's enough juice.
Further info x2 SSD and x1 mech drive..
Thanks for any help.
Re: How to work out RAM wattage?
overvolt both and its still tonnes. For calculation purposes ram is a rounding error.
Re: How to work out RAM wattage?
I've found a psu calculator and entered all the details and it came out at 356w so I should be good.
I'm undervolting for temperature improvements with the case being so small.
Re: How to work out RAM wattage?
Unless you have FB-DIMMs or RIMMs, the power consumption & thermal output is negligible. Lowered voltage however increases the lifespan of your components. (My NAS runs DDR3 at 1.25V-can't get lower with the mobo and my main 1.35V with tuned timings).
But Herulach is right, your PSU is well within it's limits.
Re: How to work out RAM wattage?
Good to know. I appreciate the help. Now I know the cpu is stable I'll have a play round with the timings. See if I can tighten them up a bit.
Re: How to work out RAM wattage?
If you wanted to check ram power usage I suppose you would remove one stick, disconnect all HDDs CD drives etc. Boot mem test off a USB stick, take a reading and then run with two sticks. Difference would be W/stick.
Re: How to work out RAM wattage?
I think with it being minimal there's not a whole lot of point. Good idea though. I'll just be happy with the slight reduction in heat. Woke up this morning and my PC was still crunching on prime blend 10hours later @ 4.3 ghz 1.18v and mem at stock xmp profile timings and speed but 1.35v max temp 76c.. Pretty happy with that.

What's the sum? I know it's ohms law. I've got the voltage, but that's the amperage and resistance?
Re: How to work out RAM wattage?
DDR3 will only pull a little power and it will depend how much load the RAM is under. I would be a lot more concerned about the of
brand PSU.
Re: How to work out RAM wattage?
Don't even worry about it. Your psu has a single 40A, 480w 12v rail. A quality 500w psu is more than enough for most single gpu setups. The GTX970 is extremely efficient and reviews show that even sli 970's have a total system pull of only around 450w at the wall. That's about the same as my single GTX780 system at peak power draw (furmark and IBT both at the same time. Normal power draw for me is around 122-365w at the wall depending on the game. Idle power draw for my whole pc is only 62w.
