    DDR4 timings vs speed

    Just out of curioisty, for the same price, one can purchase 2666MHz RAM with timings of 16-18-18-35 or 2400MHz RAM with timings of 14-16-16-31.

    I'm guessing the difference in real world performance is mind bogglingly small, but if you had to pick one, which would it be?

    I expect they're basically the same RAM - as you increase the freq you loosen the timings, so you've got a choice of either (and can presumable set either up either way).

    So firstly, whichever is cheapest, and then I'd set up depending on whether my system supported 2666 - if so, I'd tend to go for that over timings for DDR4, but I wouldn't mind if I had to go slower with tighter timings.

    Depends on the configuration, if you go for quad channel it will be a lot faster, but then you go into X99 Haswell-E, never looked back personally.

    Well I'm thinking more in the context of an i5 6500 + Z170 motherboard.

    Everything will head that way so why not spend the money now and the ram can be used in your next build, I always take the attitude of spend what you can now and it may last longer as in transferring to new builds.

    BUT and it is a big BUT!
    Do not combine DDR4 kits as that will be the reason your PC becomes unstable.

    just as a heads up, the formula to calculate clock timings is:

    (1/(0.5*Frequency))* CAS latency

    So to answer OP's question:

    2666MHz RAM with timings of 16-18-18-35 : 12 nano secs
    2400MHz RAM with timings of 14-16-16-31 : 11.67 nano secs

    So objectively, the latter should be faster by approx 0.33 nano secs. The real world difference however, shouldn't be that noticeable. I'd personally go for the cheaper one of the two
