    DDR4 Recommendations

DDR4 - the last part in my new system.

    http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/2YtpTW

Not sure what to use. I've mostly stayed with Corsair before and buy from Scan. I did a bit of research and found there is very little difference between quad and dual channel in the ways of performance. I know in the past I have gone filled half my dimms thinking I would upgrade later but when I have needed to do that the matching pairs of ram are usually hard to find or discontinued. Also there is a slight chance that even though they are matching the new and old pairs will not like each other. So I am swaying more towards going quad, unless advised otherwise.

I'm my current system I have 6GB of ram and finding it very restrictive. I keep my PC on most of the time and have many Chrome tabs open also I have a back-up plan programme that mostly eats 1GB of ram. So I originally thought 16GB would be nice but when looking at the prices there were some 32GB sets in my price range (about £160).

    16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX PC4-22400 (2800) = £112.07
    16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR4 Dominator Platinum PC4-21300 (2666) = £153.65
    16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR4 Dominator Platinum, PC4-24000 (3000) = £162.67
    16GB (4x4GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX PC4-25600 (3200) = £171.71
    32GB (4x8GB) Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX PC4-21300 (2666) = £177.11

I'm getting a little confused with the amount of choices and various differences. Any help would be appreciated.

    Re: DDR4 Recommendations

Your system cannot do quad channel anyway, it's always dual, whether you have two or four sticks.

Good point. Think that was a bit of assumption on my part.

So dual channel 2 sticks or dual channel 4 sticks still probably has no real world differences?

Four sticks is a little harder on the memory controller in the CPU, so if you were overclocking you wouldn't be able to go as far for the same voltage as with just two, but for normal usage there's no real world difference.

    Re: DDR4 Recommendations

You can set different types of memory up in the BIOS and as long as the spec is similar you can usually get them to play nice. Matched pairs are just sticks with the the same part number for a higher price. As long as the part numbers match you will be good and 2x8gb would be the way to go.

I would make a few changes to that system as you can get more performance and a bit of a better configuration.

For about the same price you can have faster graphics, bigger SSD, better PSU and a VVR FreeSync monitor.

The Crucial memory looks a little no frills but it's some of the best DDR4 available.

buy Gskill RAM, very good price and they do some very fast ram.

Just a bit curious how the XFX PRO Black Edition 850W 80+ Gold Certified is better than a Corsair 1000W 80+ Platinum Certified?

    Re: DDR4 Recommendations

Any thoughts on the speed? I've got options from 2666 to 3200 but is there any point after a certain speed and would certain speeds work better with the 2600k (I've been out of the overclocking loop for a while but back in the day you used to have to match the FSB and memory speed)?

    Thanks

anything over 2400 and you are at the mercy of the IMC, they are problematic so a bad one and you are in overclocking hell.

There's no FSB matching these days. But no, there's no point going for high speeds - 2400 is already faster than can be taken advantage of.

Just a thought, but if you did not already, perhaps check your mobo's RAM QVL so that you are assured that there are no compatibility issues?

QVL doesn't help determine compatibility issues unfortunately.

    Re: DDR4 Recommendations

Arent DDR4 platforms a little more picky than what we are used to with the rather well established DDR3?

I was under the understanding that the best place to check for compatibility was the motherboard manufacturer list of supported modules to ensure you avoid any disappointment.

Same here! Where else could you check anyway, apart from perhaps the RAM vendor's forum?

No. It's to provide a set list of RAM that's tested - at the time the motherboard is released - as definitely working. It's not updated or retested when different RAM models come out, so if something isn't on the list it doesn't mean it's not compatible at all, just it wasn't tested. It's for system builders/reviews who are taking the motherboard when it's newly released.

If you have newer RAM head to the RAM manufacturer - they'll have more recent tested lists.
