Need help finiding 32GB Kit (2x16) for 2700X

Hi,

I'm currently trying to figure out what Memory and Motherboard to get and from the looks of it the RAM is the real issue here.

I know that Ryzen needs high frequency and tight timings, but everywhere i look, only 16GB kits been recomended, is there an issue with 32GB kits or no one wants to buy 32GB because of the prices?

Anyway, i have found that the best memory to go with is F4-3600C15D-16GTZ, there are 2 problems with this product.
1) Only 16GB kit.
2) Not available in my country. (New Zealand)

What other memory you can suggest?

Current system:
I7 3770(non K).
32GB 1333mhz
GTX1080

My use:
Maya
Substance painter (hence the large memory need)
Unreal engine 4

I'm a game prop guy.

What i want from the new system:
- I want high multitasking.
- Better speed with Substance suite as its painful to work with when you have a medium size projects.
- Gaming.

Sounds to me like you have reasonable work needs, and EEC RAM might be of benefit for which Ryzen will probably help as SFAIK it supports it (unlike most intel consumer CPUs). Re availablility I thought there were websites for antipodeans where they have a uk arm who buys the stuff for you from eg Amazon UK and then arranges the shipping to NZ - kind of like a broker model... might be worth checking out. No idea of the name though.

Thanks, I used to work in a PC store long time ago and as far as i remember, The higher the tier of the product (GPU's, Memory, Motherboard) the more problems you might have.
Especially with Memory, I had so many DDR2\3 sticks came back to me at the time and not only high end stuff, this perhaps changed, but i didn't, so i would prefer to purchase locally for warranty purposes.

ECC is not for me as the price is really high and performance is low.

I have the 3200MHZ version of the memory in my country, how much head room would be there in terms of OC if i want to get it up to 3600MHZ and try and tighten the timings?

too many questions to answer. Read some RAM reviews for the type of RAM you want.

ECC is not that much slower these days. there was a detailed test on it a year or so ago, but can't remember where. In some cases it was, bizarrely, slightly (and I do mean slightly) quicker. LSS I'd go for ECC in your use case.

Never ever ever had to return RAM ever. Not SD RAM , not DDR, DDR2 or DDR3. Whether run at stock or OC. Not new, not 2nd hand. NEVER. That's not to say there aren't duff chips from time to time, but seriously>?

As for OC headroom. Depends on your mobo, cooling, case, airflow, individual ram chips, stability of PSU, the position of the moon etc. NB to overclock memory can, depending on your cpu and chipset, require boosting the bclk or at least Vcore, which can mean OC the CPU too. It does on mine in some configurations. Equally there are some CPUs where you can boost the memory clock without too much penalty. You'll just have to see what your board lets you do.

Don't forget that generally higher amount of RAM will be harder to run at high speeds as memory controller have to work harder.

This is the same reason why usually even highly rated (high speed) RAM can reach one speed when installed using only two DIMMs (or one DIMM but running high speed RAM in single channel mode is only something record breaking overclockers would be interested in), but are forced to run at lower speed when run with four DIMMs.

At high speeds (I guess that's PC3600+ these days) even the trace lengths on the motherboard will make a difference.

Still, 2x16GB should have a better chance of working at high speeds than 4x8GB.

That is why i want to go for a 2x16 and not 4x8.

you actually confirmed a suspicion of mine that 4x8 will not be as stable as 2x16.
I was thinking about TR system with more PCI-E lance and more RAM sockets, how would that work with high memory speeds and lets say 4x8 3600MHZ, Worth it?
or should i stick to AM4 and 2x16?

G.Skill have a background of supporting AMD systems - their 'FlareX' brand is designed for AMD CPUs. You'll pay quite a price though for 32gb. If you search for G.Skill F4-2933C16D-32GFX might be a good place to start...

I don't have much to contribute BUT! You are looking for exactly what I want
32GB as 2x16GB for a Ryzen 7 system. RAM compatibility seems to be a big problem with Ryzen. I'm bookmarking your thread.

You need to look up the QVL for your motherboard and see what's supported. I made the mistake of buying 64gb of 3200mhz Corsair ram only to realize the maximum supported speed for a 4x16gb kit is 3000 on that board. The price for those kits are 3x as much too so i've just settled with 2666.
