    8800gts and psu Help

    Hi davey
About two weeks ago one of my 7800gtx cards failed on ring customer support an engineer came and replaced both card with two 8800gts, great, an upgrade as the old cards where on longer stocked . but my system has become unstable and keeps locking up and freezes (playing games) on doing a bit off research it seems my 550w psu is not up to the job .on ringing mesh and telling them this they said the system would have to go back to them for tests but I have on site care.

    Thanks geo91

Did the engineer uninstall the Nvidia drivers and install the correct ones for the new cards?...

    Re: 8800gts and psu Help

    Hi geo91,

Looking at the previous call details it seems that due to the nature of the problems discussed the system would need further examination prior to repair which is why the recommendation was a return to the workshop.

To be honest I would recommend the return to base over on site attendance in this case.

Could you also put your Mesh Order Number into the box provided within your Hexus.net profile rather than in your posts? Thanks.

    Re: 8800gts and psu Help

Depends if the 550W PSU has good enough specs to run the cards really.
What are the 12v Rails specced at?
Really you want at least 38A across them to not stress the system too much.

No offence to MESH as this is an industry wide problem but most if not all PC manufacturers use the bare minimum when supplying PSUs in pre-built systems.

    Re: 8800gts and psu Help

The 550 watt PSU that mesh provide, has 35amps across the 12v rails. It can handle two X1950xtx in crossfire, but for two 8800GTS in sli, it might not be enough.

    Re: 8800gts and psu Help

    Thanks for the replies ,
Yes the correct drives are installed .This is the second system I have bought for mesh and I had a similar problem with with my first computer it was return about 4 times each time mash saying nothing was wrong with the system until a bigger psu was installed. This is why am reluctant to return to base. If this is the only way then in the box it goes.

    P.s
Davey what is your view on my psu.

    Thanks geo91

    Re: 8800gts and psu Help

BTW...as in your PM, the reason your 3D Marks are low is becuase you:
    a). Only have 1gb of RAM (non-DDR)
b). Your CPU is seriously bottle-necking your GPU's. Its like running a Ford Transit with a Porshe Engine. The power is there but its impossible to use to its potential.

With those points in mind...im am very suprised you are going as high as you are.

    Re: 8800gts and psu Help

    Not alot im afraid......
THe only thing you can do is beef up the system with a more up-to-date CPU and go DDR2.

    Re: 8800gts and psu Help

If you want to go for it you'll really need a new motherboard. Add new memory and a new CPU and you're nearly at the point where it would be better to buy a new PC to put the graphics cards in.
I think DDR400 is the limit with that board. Also, the PCIe sockets are limited to 8x in SLI.
    Go Intel!
... I use now a big vent for the whole machine now, but I cant use it forever, it is my grandma's ventilator...
