    Re: Athlon X2 5200+ 45nm 2.3GHz AM3 unlocks to Phenom FX-5200

Just decided to see how high it would go if I upped my RAM voltage and slackened a few things.

Hit my usual platform limit at 300FSB so got to 3.45GHz (at 1.35 vCore) and it would still blend. Anything above that and anything stressful instantly freezes the system. I can only go over 300FSB using overdrive. Trying it from BIOS usually results in a failure to POST.

Would be interesting to see how high it could go on the right platform.

Edit: back to stock RAM volts, so 2.24GHz again. Crikey! The CPU-NB on this thing just destroys my 5000+. Couldn't get that to 2400mhz. Just blending on this with CPU-NB at 3102 MHz and HT at 2820 MHz (the multi is maxed at 10). CPU-NB voltage is 1.275.

Further edit: Edit: spoke too soon. BSOD followed by no POST. I think I'll have to do it more systematically when I have time.

    Re: Athlon X2 5200+ 45nm 2.3GHz AM3 unlocks to Phenom FX-5200

Just a push to see where I could get to, no way any stability claimed here. Really limited with the 11.5 multi as the 4x divider results in a no post so stuck with the 5.33x could not get the ram over 900 and post, tried 2 sets, corsair xms3 1600mhz/team 2000mhz. Had already unlocked to quad in my asrock 890gxe, but it gave up the ghost, just had time to try it in my new gigabyte 870a ud3(bios f5a seems it needs a little more work). I would hazzard a guess 3.5/3.6 + is easily doable for this chip, not bad at £31

    cheers

Any stability testing yet? (Edit: Just saw the time of your post. Forgive my impatience...)

Those OCs are pretty impresive. whats stock CPU NB voltage btw?

They will charge a restocking fee and I think you need to post. I did on some heatsinks and lost a few quid. Someone else would buy it.

    Re: Athlon X2 5200+ 45nm 2.3GHz AM3 unlocks to Phenom FX-5200

I think stock CPU-NB voltage is 1.125v. That's what is reported in Overdrive as the default value and, looking at CPU-z, it seems to have got the default vCore right.

I think that means I'm running at 1.275 CPU-NB voltage for 2.25GHz (+150mv) (my BIOS doesn't tell me what the value acutally is). +100mv resulted in instability at this speed so a little extra was required. Preliminary testing indicates that I could go much higher without much of an increase in voltage but I don't have time for the required stability testing just yet.

No they won't charge a restocking free - you are entitled by law to return products at your own expense for a full refund minus shipping under the Distance Selling Regulations. Not that Scan try to pull cons like that on people AFAIK, they never have with me.

Ah okay I probably got it wrong on the refund side.

Back to the OC, are you guys tempted to lower the HT link? It isn't supposed to help performace wise and its another thing that can go wrong.

    Re: Athlon X2 5200+ 45nm 2.3GHz AM3 unlocks to Phenom FX-5200

Not really. No reason to lower it if stress testing indicates that it's stable. I would lower it temporarily when raising overclock of other things so as to eliminate an additional potential for instability.

It does have some performance benefits but they appear in rare circumstances. I believe it's useful when your frame buffer exceeds the physical vRAM on your graphics card so the GPU needs to access system RAM. That never happen with most CPU benchmarks and rarely in games with a discreet graphics card but when it does, it will keep the minimum frametrate higher.

So you're stable at 1.4v more or less? That's decent if it is. The thing that still gets me is that unlockable chips are sometimes even better overclockers than stock! My chip normally maxes out at about 3.7ghz in reviews, yet I've got it at 3.81 and it could go higher with more voltage I reckon.

3.5/3.7 is what most phII seem to be able to do. It will take a bit more time to find the sweet spot on this chip, this is was just a bit of fun purchase/back up cpu, as I have an x6 earmarked for the gigabyte. As for oc on a particular cpu, it really boils down to luck. There was a time when there was databases kept on steppings particularly 939, I have had some great cpus all random purchases

    AM2 4400

my best x6 95w low volts required for 24/7 will boot and bench@4.3

Just pushed mine up to my FSB limit to see how it did:

Had to use 2.1v on 1.8v rated RAM to get there so will be dropping it back down and don't intend to do much stability testing. Passed 5x IBT standard though.

That's an impressive clock for an XP - what motherboard was it on? Best I've ever got my Tbred B 2400+ to was 2340MHz (180x13) (from 2083MHz stock (166x12.5)), but that was on a budgetish ASUS A7V8X-X (VIA KT400) mobo which isn't the best overclocker...
