    Socket AM3 Motherboard

    Hi,

I am currently running an AM2+ motherboard with DDR2 Memory and a 955 BE CPU

I have been considering buying a new mobo and ram as the clip which holds my CPU cooler down on my current motherboard is broken so I need to lay the case on its side so that the cooler does not hang off (dangerous!), unfortunately I cannot find any simple tables and I simply know nothing about what to look for on a motherboard.

I have about £100 to spend on both the motherboard and RAM.

Any suggestions? Or could anyone educate me on what to look for on a motherboard?

    Re: Socket AM3 Motherboard

Why not just email gigabyte and get a new socket holder as am2 ad am3 socket holders are the same. Also on ebay.

    £4 delivered New from china.

    Re: Socket AM3 Motherboard

And if you wait until the AM3+ boards supporting bulldozer are released on mass you could see a further price decrease in AM3 boards.
Of course I'm perfect you just need to lower your expectations.

    Re: Socket AM3 Motherboard

I have considered replacing the socket holder but as I want to get a little more into video encoding I would have thought upgrading to DDR3 would be the better way to go.

DDR 3 will make little to no difference to video encoding unless your running short on ram where it would be cheaper to buy more.

    Re: Socket AM3 Motherboard

Recently a friend had the same problem with AMD pc, fixed with a cable tie
Video encoding would be a lot faster if you use a graphics card.

    Re: Socket AM3 Motherboard

    Hi,

It won't do much for you in the way of speed (as its still used old HT1 due to the aged chipset), but the asrock C-S boards have DDR2 and DDR3 slots. You can only use one type of RAM at any one time, and DDR3 can obviously only be used by AM3 CPUs, but if you want to replace your broken clip, one of these boards would avoid you having to buy new RAM now, but would allow you to get DDR3 in the future if required / wanted. Not really an upgrade though, more of a sideways alternative! Pretty cheap to at about £30

    Cheers!
