    Which motherboard for an i5 sandybridge

    looking for some quick advice please

    I have to build a intel i5 sandybridge 3ghz pc but I read that there is an issue with some compatibility with some motherboards over sata controllers.

    I am after a midi board. must have usb3 but doesent need raid or onboard gfx for around £60

    any suggestions.

    thanks

    What socket??

    If it is socket 1155 you will be lucky to even get 4 RAM slots!!

    Re: Which motherboard for an i5 sandybridge

    2 slots will be fine.

    1: I was confused by what the difference between the 1155 boards where with H61 Q67 etc.

    2: my concern was that scan states when buying a sandybridge chip

    **Please note: Intel Sandybridge SATA Issue on P67 and H67 Motherboards.
    There is NO Issue with Sandybridge Processors (CPU's). Only Motherboards are potentially affected.
    Devices connected to SATA Ports 0 & 1 or Using the SATAIII (6Gb/s) Ports are not affected.**

    i didnt understand exactly what the issue is and which boards where a big problem

    Re: Which motherboard for an i5 sandybridge

    There was a problem with the Intel chipset SATA 2 on early sandybridge motherboards. If you buy a revision 3 (or B3) board this issue is fixed - it's very hard not to buy a revision/B3 board these days.

    Do you mean micro ATX? You can't go wrong with most of them. I like the Asus p8p67-M because Asus have a really nice BIOS.

    2 ram slots isn't at all limiting - 4GB is more than enough for most uses, but you could easily get 8GB cheaply.

    Intel comparison table:
    http://ark.intel.com/Compare.aspx?id...06,52807,52812,

    Z68 = high end gamer
    P67 = mid end gamer
    H67 = mid end HTPC
    H61 = Low end HTPC (fewer USB/sata)
    Q67 = high end enterprise (virtualisation, TPM etc)
    Q65 = mid end enterprise
    B65 = mid-low end small business

    Re: Which motherboard for an i5 sandybridge

    Two RAM slots means a cheaper PCB and for £60 to £80 motherboards to have them is frankly pathetic unless they are mini-ITX.

    I would try and get an H67 chipset based motherboard as it supports ACHI. The H61 does not support SATA3.0 and usually does not have USB3.0 too AFAIK.

    TBH,if you are spending £130+ on the processor I would not be skimping too much on the motherboard.

    Edit!!

    This motherboard has 2 RAM slots but uses the H67 chipset and has SATA3.0 and USB3.0 ports and is around £60:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/msi-h...ata6gplususb30

    It is the only two slot Intel non mini-ITX motherboard over £45 I would even barely consider as it is tarted up with USB3.0 and SATA3.0 ports.

    Re: Which motherboard for an i5 sandybridge

    This motherboard looks like it will fit the budget well:

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/259261

    It has no USB3.0 but has SATA3.0 and 4 RAM slots. The two port USB3.0 cards are around the £16 to £20 price range.

    BTW,only the P67 and Z68 motherboards can be used to overclock with and only the K series processors are capable of being overclocked a decent amount. The non-K series processors have vey limited overclocking potential.

    i'm just about to build an i5 2500K system and i'm getting a P8P67 Pro board. apparently a good combination for a decent price.
