Unhappy Need help - run out of ideas

I am posting here in the hope some clever person might be able to solve my system problem but apologies if this is the wrong forum.

The problem I am experiencing is with displaying 3-d graphics, not just with games (here it usually freezes within 5 seconds of starting a game) but even just zooming into Google Earth. I get multi-coloured squares in various sized panels on the screen followed by BSOD and reboot.

I have tried re-installing XP, have installed Windows 7, have used both the 32-bit and 64-bit processing capability of my chip, gone from an ATI HD4850 GPU to an Nvidia GTX460 and now tried a GTX260. Have tried numerous driver versions, have tried putting graphics card in the second (4x) PC-E slot and all the above efforts produce the same problem.

I had a 700w PSU installed a while back so there's plenty of power. I am now wondering if it's my motherboard that is faulty but the pc works fine in 2-d mode such as when just opening up different windows, surfing the web, Excel, Word etc.

What else could it be? I am at a loss.

    Mobo: Abit IP35 pro with 4x 1Gb ram (PC2 8500)
    Processor: Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 @ 3200 speed.

    Can anyone help out here.

    Cheers.

    Hi..
I did have a similar problem with a ATI 5770 Card I bought from ebay and I ended up sending it back.
It would be very unlikely your motherboard.
If you have tried 3 different graphics card only thing might be is the PSU or RAM

Thanks for your thoughts Cabidge. I have checked and re-seated the memory sticks so the only way to rule out memory is to buy new sticks.

How can I test the operation of the psu? Surely it either works or doesn't work?

My last resort is to upgrade with a new i series processor which will entail a new compatible mobo and memory. Having already changed the gpu, psu and added 2 new sata drives the only original components of my machine will be the dvd drive and the case. Sounds a bit like Trigger's broom!

What brand is the PSU? If it was an off-the-shelf generic PSU then the chances are it can't even supply half of its rated value, and it's likely to be inefficient and "dirty" whilst doing it. Post us up as many details as you can get off it (particularly the rated current & power on each rail) as I'd almost be willing to put money on it being the PSU...

Re: Need help - run out of ideas

I would expect this to be a graphics card or PSU fault, so given you have tried 3 graphics cards in it I would suspect the PSU (or you are the very unlucky with graphics cards).

Other possibility is the system overheating if the case airflow isn't very good.

A PSU is a surprisingly difficult bit of kit to design and build, and quality varies dramatically. Hence you will see us more brand sensitive about PSUs than other components.

Re: Need help - run out of ideas

Thanks guys, well my PSU is a OCZ Mod x-stream 700 which seems to get good reviews and is a well known brand.

My case is a Thermaltake Armor, a very spacious case with a 200mm (8") fan on the side plus 4 further fans inside so I think plenty of cooling is achieved. I should have mentioned that I have always been able to run Furmark in full-frame stability mode for up to 15 mins without any crashes and GPU temp on the 460 doesn't go above 67 degrees. I assume that in this heavy usage mode the PSU is being worked hard too without any probs.

It's strange that Furmark never causes the problems that I get at other times with other programs, maybe it doesn't utilise the same parameters.

Today I ran Memtest86-4 and my memory checked out ok.

Just tried my flight sim game again (OpenGL mode selected) on the Windows 7 partition and it crashed within 15 seconds with the message:

"Nvidia OpenGL driver lost connection with display driver. Unable to continue. See Nvidia.com/page/support.html Error code 8."

I haven't checked this out yet but there's no guarantee I'll understand it anyway!

However, I then tried it with DirectX selected and I managed to complete a mission that lasted for about 5 mins without a crash - so don't know if that's a promising sign.

Does this new info shed any light on things?

    Cheers.

Re: Need help - run out of ideas

Wow, that's some collection of hardware you got there Shaithis!

Not sure what messages are displayed when I get the BSOD because it's gone in a flash. It may well be nvlddmkm.sys but cannot say for sure.

Been doing some more testing today and the flight sim seems ok when I select No Sound from the config menu on startup but as soon as I choose any sound option I get near-instant freezes/crashes. I'm wondering if there is a conflict between Nvidia and my audio setup which is Realtek.

    Cheers.

You can disable the HDMI audio in device manager.

If you want to see your BSODs....

Computer > right-click Properties > Advanced System Settings > Startup and recovery > Untick automatically restart.

    S O L V E D !!

Well, having struggled to solve the problem with my Pc for several weeks it turns out to have been caused by a conflict betreen Realtek and Nvidia audio drivers. I disabled the Nvidia ones in device manager (there were 4 of them!) and all is ok with XP and Windows 7 boot modes.

Thanks Staithis for your advice and helping to return my sanity to me.

Sorry this wasn't a mobo issue afterall.

Re: Need help - run out of ideas

Is the motherboard fully compatible with the RAM and CPU on its BIOS flash version, if not sure then just update your BIOS for some future proofing... As this sometimes causes driver conflicts...
