Crosshair IV Extreme - Bulldoser support questions

I have read that Asus have made a Bios that will make this motherboard and more support the BULLDOZER CPU,
But from what I have read is that AM3+ has one more pin,
So what will I have to do to make it fit into the socket?

    Summary?
    The Bios Update is meant to be done when the CPU is fitted;
But how to fit is, will is fit natively or what do I have to do?

Re: Crosshair IV Extreme - Bulldoser support questions

The FX CPUs are supported on the mobo with BIOS version 0813 or later running. The FX CPU should just drop into the socket, the first gen FX chips don't have the extra pin but the AM3+ socket is ready for CPUs with that extra pin when they come.

Re: Crosshair IV Extreme - Bulldoser support questions

Thanks for the maga Rapid reply, I was wondering what would you reccomend the 1100T, FX 8120 or FX 8150
From what I read the FX have tons of little hiccups, especially to do with the fact that they are modular, What would you say is best, for gaming and desktop applications on one monitor with a Radeon 6870 in tandem...

Get this as a stop-gap CPU:

    http://forums.hexus.net/current-barg...7-74-scan.html

The 95W Phenom II X6 1055T was a decent overclocker IIRC,so this should be not too bad(hopefully as YMMV with overclocking as it is not guaranteed).

Alternatively, try overclocking your existing CPU and wait until Vishera is released.

I do like that deal but I would like something >3GHz 4 or 6 cores, Black Edition would be great,
And what the hell is Vishera and when does it come out?

I might, my board fully supports it, It is not cores I am after though but pure speed and functionality
My current system is not overclocked and never will be, It has never crashed either

The Phenom II X6 1100T and FX8150 are well over £160 ATM. The FX8120 is probably the best value for money of the CPUs you mentioned:

    http://overclockers.co.uk/showproduc...odid=CP-318-AM

You can get £20 cashback from AMD if you but the CPU needs to be purchased before the 29th:

    https://www.amd-promotions.com/fx/uk/index.asp

With the OcUK deal the CPU will be around £140 delivered with a free copy of the latest Deus Ex game.

Vishera is the successor to Bulldozer and is being released in Q3 2012 AFAIK. It should have better single thread IPC and higher clockspeeds for a given TDP when compared to Bulldozer.

The motherboard you have should overclock even a non Black Edition CPU fine and remember the Phenom II X6 1045T has a lower stock voltage than a Phenom II X6 1090T or 1100T,hence in theory it should be a reasonable CPU for overclocking.

There is also the Phenom II X4 960T:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/amd-p...che-95w-retail

It has an unlocked multiplier and is based on a Phenom II X6 so it can potentially be unlocked to a six core CPU.

    I would try this.
I really would not like to overclock whatsoever, Will the Vishera work on my motherboard 100% or will some functions be cut out due to AM3+ being used in AM3??

If Bulldozer works fine,so should Vishera and by then the later steppings of Bulldozer will be out too. I would wait until then. Look at the FX8120 for example. It launched with both 125W and 95W TDP models with the majority being the former. Now in the latest AMD roadmap, all FX8120 CPUs will be 95W.

The CPU from OcUK is pre-overclocked and is not a bad deal if you include the cashback. I still suspect that unless you are benchmarking, your Athlon II X3 460 should be adquate for the time being.

Ok if the Bulldozer works then Logically the next gens of the BD should work but as:

And yes it is but due to it being an Athlon it does not support Ram higher than 1333MHz I would not like to bottleneck my system by not using my 1866MHz RAM to its potential...

If I was getting BD I would wait a few more months. It seems the FX8150 has not had a speed bump yet but the rest of the range has had speed bumps or TDP drops.

Re: Crosshair IV Extreme - Bulldoser support questions

So what, I should either wait or get 8120, what do you mean by speed bumbps or TDP drops?

When BD was released there were issues with the process used to make them(done by a company called Global Foundries) which meant the BD CPUs consumed more power than they should have, and had lower clockspeeds.

However, since it has been a few months since launch, the problems seem to be getting better. This means for a given clockspeed, the TDP and power consumption have dropped or either at the same TDP and power consumption clockspeeds should increase.

    Look at this post:

The FX8120 was mostly 125W TDP models with a few 95W ones. Now ALL FX8120 CPUs in the next few months will be 95W with the 95W FX8140 is being released soon. Hopefully given a few months more, the 125W FX8150 should be released by a higher clocked model at the same TDP and same price.

If you cannot wait, the pre-overclocked 125W FX8120 deal on OcUK is not too bad due to the cashback and free game. The cashback is £20 and the game is worth at least £10.
