    Have I fried my board?

    Hi

I intall new ram and HD tv card to my rig and turned on pc it wouldn't post just switched on briefly then off again.

So put everything back to way it was before installed ram & hd card. Same problem won't post. Then I took ram out video card out basically everything out to start from scratch made sure I could get some power into board turned on the power oh no whats that burning smell!! The cable felt really warm that provides power to cpu the 12v cable I think. Now when I try and fire it up nothing happens when i remove the 8pin power connector and leave the 24 pin power connector it fires up and then shuts off again. I am guessing I have either fired my motherboard or CPU or both!!

Can anyone help confirm diagnosis before I order new board? my hardware is MSI p55-GD65 and core i5 570.

Re: Have I fried my board?

it could be the psu as it will just flash on then off without the 12v connected, but the other 50% is a fried motherboard.

not had the hot cable before but i have had a dead motherboard doing the same thing.

Re: Have I fried my board?

This happened to me and it's because I forgot to unplug the power cable from my pc before putting the card in the pci slot. Fried the board. I'll never make that mistake again.

You should leave the cable plugged in so it's earthed, you should however make sure the switch in the socket is off.
