    i7 2600k mobo + ram - Z77 or Z68?

So....! One of these threads indeed!

Is the any merit in these high spec motherboards for £180+ ? I have always bought a really good motherboard and not regretted it.

What motherboard would you get, today, if you had to?

What ram would you stick in it?

    Cheers!

    Update
Being a new build, it makes sense to go Z77 right?

    Re: i7 2600k mobo + ram

Unless you use the features I'd say no. I was in this position a while ago with P67 boards and an i5 2500K. Went with the cheaper MSI P67A-GD65 and haven't regretted it for a single day. Overclocks likes a mofo, is hugely stable and runs really cool. Personally I've never been a fan of boards totally covered by heatsinks as the benefit was always marginal at best. Never had need of dual nics, firewire or E-sata and figured if I did in the future then I could always by an add in card. So do your research and work out what you really need/want, then the choice should be more obvious. For me I'd probably go with MSI again so Z68A-GD65 or even a lower GD55 if it had what I wanted.

    Re: i7 2600k mobo + ram

A lot of the 180ukp+ boards have an extra PCI-E controller chip on to give extra lanes for people that want quad-sli, tri-fire, raid cards, sound cards etc eating up lots of lanes.

Other then that, I cannot see anything on them to justify the prices over much cheaper boards.

Z77 Chipset and boards , well the ones I have experienced are much more stable with full slot population especially of the DIMM slots. So at any stage you want SLI, Crossfire or more importantly a RAM upgrade to four sticks or your starting with 4 sticks anyway then go Z77 for sure.

Go for Z77 - look at the Asus P8Z77-V LX for a cheap board, or further up the P8Z77-V family for more features. The ASRock Extreme4 or 6 might also be worth a look, again depending on the features you want. As long as it's got enough DIMM slots and the ports you require, you should be golden with any of them.
