Intel Motherboards - Whats the difference?

    Hey Guys,

I've been trying to pick a motherboard but I'm not really sure what I should be looking for. When I go on Scan I have the choice of B, H, P & Z and then 61, 67, 68, 75 & 77. What do these different numbers and letters stand for because they are all the same Intel Socket 1155. If anyone can enlighten me and point me in the "right" direction of what I should be looking at for my new build it would be a big help

    Thanks,

H = no overclocking but has IGP support
P = overclocking but no IGP support
Z = has both (although a few Z boards have the IGP disabled....best to check specs for DVI/HDMI ports first)

The 6x are the older boards. The higher the second digit, the more features normally.
The 7x boards are the newer ones with extra features (some features only available if you use an Ivybridge CPU in them)

Thanks for that Shaithis, so for my I5 build I would be better looking at the Z77 range of boards because they will give me "some" future proofing. I'm still unsure if I should go Ivy Bridge or just stick with Sandy Bridge because of its overclocking. I know this might sound sad but I wanted to colour code the inside of my case red/black/white but for some reason almost all the Z77 boards are blue

Also, what are the advantages and disadvantages between an ATX board and a mATX board??

mATX is micro ATX and are much smaller than ATX boards. Generally a mATX board will only have a couple of slots for expansion whilst an ATX will have around six. ATX boards will also have more room for extra features that the manufacturer thinks we want.

Re: Intel Motherboards - Whats the difference?

You normally (and I must stress normally) get better VRMs on the ATX boards, allowing better overclocking.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with SB as IB is essentially out there......of course once we see retail prices Monday, my stance may change
But if you really want to push the overclock, IB isn't the best choice but you have to ask yourself what speed you actually need. I know I will be more then happy at 4.5GHz......so the extra OC I would get from SB seems pointless, especially when traded off against PCI-E 3.0 support.

What exactly were you going to do with the system, what else your planning to plug into it and what expectations do you have of it? (other then a red/black colour scheme ) Might make it easier to give a more definitive answer....

Re: Intel Motherboards - Whats the difference?

I wouldn't be looking to clock anything past the 4.5//4.7 area and plan to cool my CPU with a Corsair H100 so it should stay cool enough. I guess if the price is right then there would be no harm going the Ivy Bridge route to let me take full advantage of the z77 motherboard.

The system is mainly planned to be used for gaming and also to store some media. I will only be looking to buy one high end GPU for the system (GTX 670//680 or ATI 7950//7970) and have no plans to xFire or SLI at this time. I will be looking to include two SSD and one large HDD, the two SSD are to be used for my OS, Games and other program's while the larger HDD will be my media drive.

I will be looking to fit everything in to a NZXT Phantom 410 mid tower and plan to buy a Dell Ultrasharp 2412m monitor to finish off the build.

Hope that gives you an idea of where I'm trying to go with this, thanks.
