    Z77 or X79

Sorry if this has been posted already.

Currently im on an Asus Maximus Forumla III with an i5 750 @ 3.7ghz.

I was thinking of upgrading the motherboard/cpu/ram but I am a bit out of the hardware scene so not sure what is best to get sometimes as ive not kept upto date

Is it worth me upgrading at all? My machine is mainly used for gaming and music production.

What is the better chipset to go for the Z77 or X79??

    Cheers

    Alex

    Re: Z77 or X79

Z77 would probably be better unless:

You need PCIe 3.0 today and/or you need more PCIe lanes than an IB can provide.
You need tons of memory bandwidth for a particular application.
You want an IB but you need a platform that can support more memory (32GB+).

Depends how intensive your music production is, but i imagine not very so Z77 would imho be better.

No - if your computer doesn't have trouble in terms of performance at present.

    Pretty much what Krono said.

From my experience it is very unlikely that you'll need more than 32GB of RAM for music production and the memory bandwidth that the Z77 offers will be sufficient.

    Thanks for the replys guys.

The only other reason for wanting to upgrade was so i can put my current system in my HTPC box so i have to nice gaming rigs in my room if needed as i use both quite often as teh HTPC is connected to my 50" TV.

Is the X79 and Socket 2011 going to be around for long or is it going to be palmed off quick and a pointless solution?

The lower TDP CPU should be in your HTPC,if you consider the usage. I would stick with your main rig for the time-being.

A 65W TDP Core i3 would be fine with a lower TDP card such as HD6850 or HD7850.

I already have an older setup in my HTPC so it will just be a straight swap if i did update my main rig.

    Re: Z77 or X79

X79 supports quad channel memory, Z77 is dual channel. tbh this probably won't matter, and as there's a larger choice of Z77 boards and as the latest ivy bridge 3570k/3770k goodness is compatible with Z77 this seems to be the way to go. As Krono5 said, the X79 also has more PCIe lanes, so that may be a consideration depending on what you want the rig to do.

    Re: Z77 or X79

I can't see much benefit for gaming with X79. Quad channel memory won't offer much performance gain in gaming and few games are optimised for 6 cores. As for music, i'm not really sure. Z77 would be a lot cheaper as well.

    Re: Z77 or X79

Z77 with IB is a more cost effective option for gaming. You might want to grab a i7 3770k for your music production, the hyper-threading will help with rendering (and give a small boost to some games).

The i7 3770k will come close to or match the SandyBridge-E processors for the type of things your going to be doing.

Only reason I can see for you going for the X79 is if you want more than 2 graphics cards.

    Re: Z77 or X79

For music production or gaming there really is no point in upgrading your system. For gaming you would just get a better graphics card and for music, unless you are using tons of VST/samples for orchestral works etc then your i5 at 3.7 is more than good enough, besides more memory is more of a prerequisite for that kind of production.

    Re: Z77 or X79

I was so tempted to go for X79 myself and the 3820 CPU used to look great value compared with the 2600k etc. However the Sandybridges seem to have dropped a fair bit in price recently. However what put me off was that even with a clock speed advantage over the 2600k, the 3820 was actually slower...
