Is it the motherboard or is it the RAM?

Hi, have been having many issues with my computer recently.

New power supply, new graphics card... old issue.

Before my graphics card died my RAM worked fine, I didn't realise but I was running the RAM in slots B1 and B2. Anyway today after receiving my graphics card and power supply my RAM will not work in those slots any more.

Both RAM work fine in slot B2.

If I put RAM into B1 and B2, I have no POST and no LED.

If I use dual channel by putting the RAM in A2 and B2, I POST, but the BIOS and Windows does not recognise the 8GB RAM, only 4GB.

If I try and boot with 1x stick in any other slot other than A2 it will not POST... LED lights up. So RAM only works in A2, is this the RAM slot? I looked on the DRAM vendor list for this board and I can't find Eudar RAM, but then the RAM was working fine for months until my HD 5830 died.

RMA the RAM, or RMA the board?

Bare in mind the only slots I have used on this board is B1 and B2, no other slots have been touched until today.

ASUS recommend A2 to be used for 1x stick, or B2 and A2 for 2x sticks. And as mentioned the other stick is never recognised.

Re: Is it the motherboard or is it the RAM?

First are you using the same motherboard/components in your profile system?

Brand and model of your ram your using

Lastly have you tried Memtest to see if your ram modules have any errors in them? test them 1 stick at a time and leave for a few runs if you haven't. The website has an auto installer to set up an USB stick for memtest. All you need to do is boot from the USB by changing boot priority from your bios menu

From what you've mentioned so far it's difficult to say what is the problem without further diagnostic information. Could be spoilt Ram slots or spoilt ram.

Keep us posted what your results are...

Re: Is it the motherboard or is it the RAM?

    Yeah same board.

    ASUS M5A97 PRO
    Eudar 1333mhz 4GB RAM x 2

I used memtest86+ not long ago before my PC died, and I just tested it with Windows memory tester earlier too. No errors were found.

The motherboard is under a month old, the memory is under 6 months old, all other components are brand new.

Re: Is it the motherboard or is it the RAM?

try it with memtest and test one stick at a time to rule out the ram completely. I don't trust Windows memory tester and it's not as reliable and the gold test is still memtest. For e.g if you want to RMA ram to Scan/Corsair they will always ask if you have MEMtest them

The other issue is, where did you buy the ASUS motherboard, as if you do need to RMA eventually, the process is often long and protracted if you have to return to ASUS

I bought the board from Scan fortunately so should be easy to RMA.

Will test the RAM now, I have memtest86+ on my USB already

hope it's the ram as it's quicker than MB problems. I've had to RMA my MB and I reckon it'll be 3 weeks before I have a computer again lol

Re: Is it the motherboard or is it the RAM?

I haven't had computer for just over month trying decide what to do about my graphics card problem. So fingers crossed its my RAM, much easier, Least I will still have one stick left

Memtest86+ running first RAM stick at the moment.

If both pass guess I will have to RMA the board so hopefully my RAM "suddenly" died

    Memtest86+ passed, no issues.

Guess I will just have to RMA the board

oh well, you can always hope. At least you bought it from Scan. Probably your old GPU took out your MB with it. In my case I just heard a pop sound lol, I only hope my GPU is not fried when I get my MB back.

Re: Is it the motherboard or is it the RAM?

Yeah, fingers crossed they'll send a replacement. I haven't had this long and to have it "repaired" isn't up to it, cost a lot and I can't have it dying all the time.

I have never had anything pop on my components, they just decide to not work shame components are so delicate, easily broken

Give us an update in due time... Mine arrived this morning but SCAN haven't acknowledged on their own Return tracker status. So expect a slow service from them unfortunately.

Re: Is it the motherboard or is it the RAM?

I know this might be in wrong section, but just wondering. Can the 970 chipset limit a HD 6850?

My HD 6850 is performing far worse than my old HD 5830, so I don't know if this could be due to the chipset, my odd DIMM slots etc? Is it an indication something is dodgy with my motherboard?

I bought an OC Bundle on scan on the first of may, I've had nothing but problems with it so had to return it for repair//replacement and I'm still waiting so I wouldn't be holding your breath for a fast return.

Re: Is it the motherboard or is it the RAM?

Well this is the MSI R6850 OC edition, it seems a bit... slow.

My XFX HD 5830 was nice and smooth, fps stayed above 20. I find with my HD 6850 in gaming any turn or action causes the fps to drop well below 10, I also get slight freezes now and again, with fraps reporting a huge drop in fps after it comes back. I don't know if its just my motherboard playing up and RAM from all the problems above, but it seems a bit strange. I use fraps to see

My mate has a 970 motherboard and an HD6870(uses the same chip) so it shouldn't have an issue.

    What games are you running??

Re: Is it the motherboard or is it the RAM?

    Crysis
    Battlefield 3

They are my most intensive games. 1440x900. My HD 5830 at no problem at ultra even with AA and HBAO on.

Same map, HD 6850 can't hold up ultra. Even at low there are still some hiccups. I thought it may be the internet connection, but tried a lot of servers. It's only when I turn or graphical intensive moments.

The random freezes could be due to the motherboard being dodgy, I have contacted Scan to get that sorted out (so will take weeks).

    EDIT:
I have also replaced the power supply with the XFX 550W you suggested, so brand new components
