what to go with the new Asus Maximus V Formula ?

well it's my birthday next month and i have had the current setup for at least 2 years so its time to think about the next upgrade!

i have spotted ASUS's latest ROG board with built in water cooling & have to say i likes!

the question remains, what CPU and memory to go with it!

the current rampage 2 extreme has a I7 920 running 4ghz so i would expect the latest chips to go a bit faster than that under water, I admit i have not been keeping up with the tech and overclocking of the latest generation intel I7 so i am throwing it out to the hexites

Everything I've read so far says Ivy Bridge gets hot under the collar when you over-clock it, leading to slightly lower maximum overclock speeds than Sandy Bridge. That said, nothing will outperform the i7-3770k if you can hit comparable clock speeds, and under water any heat issues shouldn't be a big problem. The usual i5/i7 caveat applies - i.e. unless you're regularly running heavily threaded workloads the i7-3770k won't provide much benefit over a cheaper i5-3570k.

As far as comparison back to Sandy Bridge goes, the 2500k is pretty much the same price as the 3570k - it reputedly overclocks better but of course Ivy Bridge has slightly high IPC so swings and roundabouts. The 2700k is quite a bit cheaper than the 3770k (at scan at least: £240 v £260) so might be more worth a punt.

If you want the latest and greatest, though, it's the i7-3770k

Re: what to go with the new Asus Maximus V Formula ?

yeh i had a quick look about and the 3770 would seem to suit me best, end of the day the cpu and mobo's got a pa120.3 to keep it cool as the 2 video cards have the 140.3.

i cant be arsed to go down the route of motherboard blocks again if something good is on offer, if i could have got my hands on the EVGA x58 water cooled mobo last time as planned i would got that
