    Z68 Board clearance deal...

I've been waiting for a good deal on Z77 motherboards and Ivy or Sandy Bridge processors for a while and today I noticed the Scan clearance sale.

I am interested in this motherboard and wanted to know if it is as good as a Z77 equivalent.

Saving £20 is appealing to me but I plan on using the board for a long time so don't want to find out there was something I could of used from the Z77 chipset.

Z77 details are in the reviews, eg:

There's some virtu stuff that's quite interesting if you want to further leverage the inbuilt GPU in a CPU, though graphics cards are beginning to do adaptive v-sync on their own anyway. There's also native USB3 rather than having to use an auxillary chip on the board. That might mean speeds are a bit quicker/you can connect more devices, so it'd depend if you were likely to use USB 3 peripherals that actually take advantage of the boost over USB2.

When I read your post my first reaction was to just say get the Z77, but I changed my mind after reading this:

If you don't need the extra features now, and think you are unlikely to need those features over the next two to three years, then get the clearance bundle. The Z77 might outlast the Z68 in the long run, but not by a big margin, as I understand it both the Z68 and Z77 chipsets support the same CPUs and both support PCI-e 3.0, so unless you are planning on using an Ivy Bridge with integrated graphics I don't think that the Z77 offers a lot more. Kalniel has already mentioned the USB 3.0 and Sata3 differences, again, unsless you can really see a need for them I don't see the Z77 offering you much more over a Z68.

Sorry I typo'd SATA when I meant USB3 - there are no differences in SATA3 between the boards, only USB3.

CCL has the Asus P8Z68-V/GEN3 for only £75. It's a very good deal.

    Re: Z68 Board clearance deal...

I was in a similar position and decided to save money by going for a Z68 to run my new 3570k.

I waiting for delivery of a Gigabyte Z68X-UD4 today. Only just realised that it doesn't have built in Gfx output from the CPU. However this is fine with me as I wouldn't use it anyway, and I got it at a good price.

I've read that apparently the z77 chipset is more stable at running the RAM faster?

    Re: Z68 Board clearance deal...

USB3 I'm not too bothered about, the difference between the native chip and Marvel controller is not going to be notice-able. As far as I can see Virtu MVP doesn't provide better performance over Virtu, some interesting new features but none that would improve my gaming experience. Together those two small improvements aren't worth the extra £20.

I just want to make sure that those are the only significant differences both of which have zero impact on my computing experience.
