    ASUS P5N73-AM POST error

    Hi:

I'm trying to resurrect an old P5N73-AM from ASUS. It starts the BIOS POST and then sounds a continuous tone. I've swapped the RAM to the other socket and the same thing happens. Both the CPU fan and the Case fan startup, and the LED on the motherboard lights up. I've run an eraser across the contacts of the memory strip but no difference.

It appears to be an Award BIOS (or a Phoenix/Award BIOS). It never seems to get beyond the initial loader. Any comments or suggestions? I'm running 1G Samsung M378T2953EZ3-CE6 memory DDR2 667MHz DIMM. I can't tell if it's non-ECC.

Everything else is pretty much stock standard.

    Comments?

    Thanks for the help.

    Change the coin cell battery.
Most take CR2032, but check the number on yours.

Clear CMOS while battery is out.

You can pick up a cheap coin cell battery CR2032 in those holiday cards that play music.
The cards cost about 4.95 while picking up the battery in the store

Yeah i would try to clear the CMOS you can clear it by swapping the jumper over to the next pin and power on for 30 secs and then move the jumper back to its original position.

    Giddai:

I tried your suggestions to no avail. I can only surmise that the memory controller got nailed somehow. Too bad too, it was a nice board. I'll not spend more time on it. I've too many irons I've got to keep hot. I did keep the battery though. It tested brand new.

I thank you very much for your assistance. Your suggestions gave me avenues that I hadn't thought of.
