Obvious thing to do is to run a system monitor and see if there's any CPU/memory/disk usage spikes that match with the pauses - that will help determine whether there's a system resource problem. Assuming there isn't (seems unlikely) try rolling back drivers, or uninstalling it completely and reinstalling; also try using the default MS driver. Also, make sure that all traces of the old Creative drivers have been removed, in case they're causing a driver conflict.
I once had a support call for a computer that had started echoing and distorting really badly on music playback and that was as simple as Windows update downloading a new driver that the computer didn't like. A quick rollback (to the default MS audio drivers, interestingly) sorted the problem
