    AM3+ DDR mobo

    Hi all,

The motherboard in my current system has been a bit odd since I got it (had to stop using onboard graphics which helped alot) but I'm now getting relatively frequent crashes.

I have an AM3 CPU (with the 4th core unlocked) with 8GB DDR2 memory. If I just got a new motherboard which one should I look at (most seem to be DDR3) and would I still be able to unlock the 4th core?

Or is it better to look at an overall system upgrade (or a laptop!)

    Thanks,

    Neil

    Re: AM3+ DDR mobo

Getting a good mobo for DDR2, your probably only going to get 2nd hand now as i had the same experience at the beginning of the year. Looked for ages for one and eventually got one that needed repaired before it would work.

With the prices of DDR3 memory, your probably best getting a new board that supports DDR3. You could sell your DDR2 to fund it. You should still be able to unlock the 4th core.

    Board

    RAM

    Both costing you around £90.

    Re: AM3+ DDR mobo

Someone was selling an AM2+ board in the classifieds section, no onboard graphics though. Its part of a bundle but I'm sure if interest was shown he might split.....

    Re: AM3+ DDR mobo

Thanks for your help guys, didn't realise my DDR2 would be worth anything! What Would be the best (cheap) motherboard which has decent onboard graphics as I run three monitors?

Is AM3+ about to be replaced or does it have a bit of life left in it if I decided to upgrade the CPU?

    Cheers!

What are you doing with your system?? What is the specifications of your current system??

AM3+ will have Vishera released on it this month followed by one more update.

FM2 has Trinity already released on it followed by one more update.

    Re: AM3+ DDR mobo

Nothing taxing atm, its currently 8gb ddr2 with a phenom II x3, 4th core unlocked and clocked at 3.2ghz. A laptop would be more suitable for me tbh but that costs alot more!

    Re: AM3+ DDR mobo

TBH you'd probably be best off selling the ddr2 and buying an am3+ mobo and some ddr3 if you want to keep the same CPU, but if you fancy it I've an matx biostar ta790tx xe am2+ (had an am3 II x3 720 in it 'til not long ago) which I've recently taken out for an upgrade which you could have for cheap as a stopgap.

    /\ this with bells on.

DDR3 is CHEAP... get the DDR2 sold and get a new better board with DDR3 at the same time.
