    P8Z77-V LX USB 3.0 Oddity!

I recently bought one of these from Scan and, in the general sense, I am very pleased with it. It is running an i7 3770k with 16GB RAM and is quiet and quick using the auto overclock. I bought this board because I also have a P8Z68-V LX running an i7 2600k, also using the auto overclock, and it has proved very stable.

However, I have a problem with the USB 3.0 backplate connectors that I am very puzzled about. I have a 4TB Touro DeskPro external drive for back up and when I attach the drive using the cable supplied with the drive, it functions perfectly. Because my case does not have a front USB 3.0 connector, I have bought 2 different USB 3.0 extension cables so that I can connect the drive without fuss. When I use either of these extension cables the drive is not even seen nevermind accessible. What is puzzling is that I can use any mix of the cables with the Z68 board and connection is not an issue.

I am using the latest Intel USB drivers on the Z77 board and am at a complete loss to understand what is going on. Has anyone else seen anything similar and/or can offer any ideas about this? I bought the second set of USB 3.0 extension cables believing that the originals were 'fake', but this seems to be nothing to do with it.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I have seen some reports of USB 3.0 problems.

Ah here we are, and it describes how to fix it (well for this guy anyway).

Re: P8Z77-V LX USB 3.0 Oddity!

If your saying it works with the original cable supplied and not with the extension then it has to be the cable. So is the extension usb 3.0 or 2.0? is it male to female? or male usb to micro b? With my portable usb 3.0 drive I can only connect it to usb 2.0 when its only pushed half way in, when fully inserted it makes the disconnected sound.

Re: P8Z77-V LX USB 3.0 Oddity!

@Thorsson, thanks for the link. Unfortunately that's not the same board and the USB 3.0 controller on the LX is Intel, not Asmedia. The Z68board has an Asmedia controller and that functions perfectly.

@technodean, The extension cables were bought as USB 3.0 extension cables. One is unbranded from Kenable and the other is Akasa. Both of these cables function as expected when connected to the Z68 board/Asmedia controller, but neither function correctly when attached to the Z77 board/Intel controller.

I have ordered a longer A to B USB 3.0 cable to direct connect to the drive in the hope that it will circumvent the issue. It certainly seems to be an Intel controller issue but I can't find any resolution to it, as yet

Anyway, thanks to both for your input but I'm no further forward. Any point trying to contact Asus about this, would you think?

Re: P8Z77-V LX USB 3.0 Oddity!

The Pro has both Intel and Asmedia controllers. Notice that he said "I believe there's one for Intel as well". He seems to be suggesting that it's to do with Power Management and you need to make sure that it's switched off for these controllers. I don't have a USB external disk (mine's on LAN) otherwise I'd test it.

Re: P8Z77-V LX USB 3.0 Oddity!

Just for the record, I have a Asus Sabertooth X58 with an i920 D0 and the Renesas USB 3.0 controller that also exhibits a similar problem. So, out of the three, the Z68 board with the Asmedia controller seems to be the only one that works with a USB 3.0 extension cable.

Re: P8Z77-V LX USB 3.0 Oddity!

As a partial resolution, the 1.8m A to B USB 3.0 cable works fine so there is clearly some issue with the extension cables with some controllers, but not all! Odd, but that's the way it is.
