    mATX AM3+ motherboards...

    Hi all,

I'm just looking into parts for a new build and would love to use an FX6300, however the biggest the build can be is mATX, I know that there aren't any ITX AM3+ mobos, and most of the mATX ones look pretty poor.
Anyone got any recommendations for a mATX AM3+ mobo that can sensibly overclock a 6300 to 4.2-4.5GHz?

    Cheers,
    Chris

Unfortunately I don't think they actually make any 9 series chipsets for mATX on AM3+. That means for mATX you'll have to fall back on the 8 series chipset (which aren't the best for FX).

So I doubt you could overclock high if at all the FX using one of the older chipsets unfortunately reason being is their phases probably are not capable; you could get an OC on stock voltages at most.

A FM2 build with one of the high end Athlons X4s will gain you a similar performance to the FX-4300. Some FM2 boards have pretty good VRMs so you may be able to overclock it, that said it won't be near the performance of the FX-6300 nor surpass it.

    Thanks for the reply,

I had a similar hunch but wanted to check in with those more knowledgable than I. I'll probably go with a 760K then, those athlons are certainly very good value (might push up to an FM2+ board so I can upgrade if Kaveri is really compelling... and judging by the boards that have been released (like Gigabyte releasing a sniper) it may well be

    That was my plan too

    AnandTech Benchmark linky.

The 760K is similar to the 5800K, just without the IGP, however that gives a slight indication of the performance (but no means 100% accurate).

I would wait and see what Kaveri brings, no-ones getting their hopes up just yet but for now, with smaller builds it seems FM2+ may be the way to head down. There are some definitely great looking boards, plus they'll support Trinity and Richland APUs.

    Re: mATX AM3+ motherboards...

AMD AM3+ uATX support is not pretty atm.

This one is capable of taking a 140W cpu:

    http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asus-...-on-board-matx

but it is still the old 760/78L chipset so can only so 3Gb/sec SATA.

The ASUS site lists the M5A88-M, but I couldn't find one for a sane price when I last looked.
