Asus sabertooth 990fx red CPU led

As said in title I have a asus sabertooth 990fx first edition with bios version 1604. CPU is amd fx6200 oc'd to 4.4 using stock voltage. 2 8gig stick of g skills ripjaw ram. 800w psu. Amd Radeon r290x. Other that the new gpu which I have had little over a week the rest of this system I have had a year or 2.

I left my pc running to download a game to come back to it 7 hours later to be running with no display or mouse or keyboard lit up. Reset button doesn't work and holding down power button doesn't work. The only way to switch off is directly with the psu power switch.

After taking the side off I see the CPU led is permanently lit. I have cleared CMOS and moved jumper pins. Checked all power cables.

I forgot to put that the pc isn't even posting just power up the hdd and fans etc

    Is my CPU dead?

    Cheers
    Chris

Hate to ask the obvious, but what does the motherboard manual say the light being lit means?

Solid Red on CPU light is either Power (main or the 8pin), dead CPU iirc or I had one when a CPU pin was bent

Re: Asus sabertooth 990fx red CPU led

well, that could be more useful

Doom's suggestions of checking the cables from the PSU are all plugged in properly and that the PSU is actually working are good, as is checking for bent pins on the CPU (this has got easier and easier as the pin counts have gone up). Sadly bent pins on an AMX CPU are a pain to fix: on socket A you could just bend them back with a pen-knife and you'd be good to go

Definitely no bent pins. I will try to put an old rig together to test the psu.

Re: Asus sabertooth 990fx red CPU led

What are the specs of the PSU just out of interest?

So it appears to be the PSU as it fails to power two PCs. can you run onboard gpu? The other thing is to turn it off at the wall for a few hours; sounds silly but fixed a problem for me.

Other than that unless you have another PSU you could try RMA....

Re: Asus sabertooth 990fx red CPU led

Definitely sounds like a dead PSU, and they can just let go randomly like that (years back I had a computer that I left on 24/7, and one morning I came downstairs and it was just dead). What make is it? An OCed FX 6200 + GTX580 (or R9 290X) would pull quite a lot of 12V juice, so if it was a cheaper PSU or underspecced it could quite easily have given up the ghost...

Yeah I wouldn't bother trying to use it in case the cheapy power supply does more harm than good

    Hi there,

From the details given, definitely sounds like the PSU has given up the ghost.
What PSU is it out of interest?
