In two minds about two 970 am3+ mobo

    Hey hexus!

Been reading for ages into a mobo for either a 6300/8320. I was set on an Asus m5a97 evo for oc'ing the chip, but recently i was reading into Gigabytes 970A-UD3P. What made me think was Gigabytes uk rma service mainly.

Would the 970A-UD3P oc as good as the evo was my main thought, with either the 6300 or 8320? I read mixed reports with the UD3P(some pretty good, others not so) So mainly wanted to ask with some of Gigabyte mobo's sometimes throttling. I do like how the Gigabyte board looks, but that isn't as important

I'm just torn on what one to get as the Asus looks pretty solid.

Anyways thanks for reading and any replies!

Both are good boards but the EVO has a better track record.

Hey CAT, thanks for the reply! Yeah that's cool, the evo probably is the best bet but was just trying to look into the UD3P before i finally ordered You advised me well a few days back, on going back to an amd build from the more costly intel i was thinking! I finally signed up here at Hexus!

Early revisions of the UD3 lacked LLC, which can limit overclocking (as I've found to my expense ). The UD3P should be fine as it's based on a late UD3 design.

Both are good boards, take your pick!

Even without LLC I've got my FX6300 at 4.4GHz on my R1.0 GA-970a-UD3.

I was actually somewhat non plussed by the overclocking capabilities of my m5a97 EVO r2 when I had it. the same chip maxed at about 4.45 stable that is now comfortably sat at 4.8 on a sabertooth.

I've got the UD3P, and it's been fine for me. Only running an Athlon X2 with a mild overclock, so can't really offer much comment on its overall OC abilities.

Hey Bagnaj! That's cool, at least you managed to get 4.4ghz, that's pretty sweet I found it pretty tough finding alot of info on that board (i must have had 20 tabs open) reading what i could find! Just between those two really

I'll have to really think about it

Hey herulach! That Sabertooth is a pretty awesome board The main concern was throttling/vrms, it made me not want to go near msi's 970 mobo's

Hey cheesyboy! That's cool, any reply helps Knowing stability is great too!

Thanks for all of your replies guys! I'll have to make a tough choice it seems

TBH, they're very similar boards. Buy based on the features/price. I like aiTuner, particularly the fan profile aspect of it, but I'm sure similar is available on the gigabyte, and that has a dual bios.

Yeah, i wouldn't have been so torn if gigabyte hadn't of released the UD3P. The dual bios is a nice feature, i haven't completely checked out all of the software features though the Asus seems nice with the steady overclocks at a really good price.

I'm glad you guys know of the UD3P, a few reviews/builds with it&scouring newegg for reviews One review mentioned getting 5.0ghz on a 8350 (higher than what i'd ever go for&the chip gods) so it made me want to look into more I haven't upgraded in a long time, so i'm probably being far too hesitant

Must admit I haven't bothered overclocking (the 8350 has been enough so far) but I have been generally very happy with my m5a97

Hey DanceswithUnix Yea the asus board does seem really solid, it was my main choice as the 990 chipsets were more than i could afford&sli etc i'm not too fussed about. Really liked how asus put great components on the evo. This dilemma is killing me!

Well one of my mates has a 95W TDP Phenom II X6 1045T using the version one of the Asus. He runs highly CPU intensive bioinformatics programmes on it for upto a week at a time. The system has been fine.

Hey Cat, that's cool! You know i was reading randomly (as i always do lol) and came across a few people having problems with even the new revision of the 990fx board (i think bios, rather than board itself) Soo... i think asus is calling me here God, im so paranoid, hesitent& i procrastinate too much! Thanks for all of you guys advice i really appreciate it The evo seems like a great board (esp at that price currently too)

Its better to do your research first,so you have less problems when doing the build.

Re: In two minds about two 970 am3+ mobo

Yeah, i agree 100%. I remember before i came across the evo (many months ago) i thought some of the asus boards were the same of similar (such as the l.e, etc...) &thought omg do i need a sabertooth And a few of the msi/gigabytes (older revs, etc...) after reading into them made me think twice. I remember the last time i upgraded (god, i was soo broke then) i pretty much picked up what i could, read a few reviews on the site i bought from... but god, i should so have actually researched! Looking back, i felt quite lucky it worked with not too many problems!

Thanks for the reply &appreciate all of your help greatly!
