G3258 Overclock on H81-P33 (MSI) w/ Stock Cooler
If i was going to buy both these what would i get in terms of a stock cooler overclock on this board? Is 4GHz+ Unreasonable or can i expect higher. I know the cooler isn't great but it seems to do for a slight OC.
Also if using the stock cooler how loud do you think it would get? As loud as an 8350 on stock? Because i know that is something i dont want to experience again :p
Thanks

Have a look at this thread over at anandtech's forums. Someone got 4.5ghz with the board you are looking at. One thing to keep in mind though is that there is a good chance that a H81 board is likely to need a bios flash for a G3258 to work in it.
Re: G3258 Overclock on H81-P33 (MSI) w/ Stock Cooler
That anandtech thread seems useful, also for reference, the anniversary board that ASRock released alongside Intel's release of the G3258, the Z97 Anniversary, has built in boost to 4GHz, therefore round about 4GHz should be possible on most boards on stock cooling, assuming they can handle the power.
Take it with a pinch of salt, as each CPU is different, but if ASRock are confident enough selling a board based around built in 4GHz boost, you shouldn't have any issues hitting that on a stock cooler on the CPU's side, and most boards seem capable of handling it, as the aforementioned thread also points out.
Ofcourse if you want to be absolutely certain, get the ASRock anniversary board since it was sold on that feature, but as its £20 more expensive and this CPU is generally used for cheap but powerful builds, I suspect you don't want to be throwing an extra £20 around when other boards can handle the same manually.

I've heard that before that h81m's require BIOS flashes but PCPartPicker says it won't need one and when I asked it said most h81ms have a new BIOS anyway. What's your turn on this?

Generally speaking, this long after the release of the CPU, all of the boards being actively sold by any high profile seller will be newer stock that is available already updated. You should only have to worry about version if you're buying preowned or from a shop you suspect may hold its stock longer.
You can also always just ask the shop, I see that Scan sell the H81-P33, I'm sure they could tell you either the bios version for sure, or a rough estimate how long they've had the current stock (they probably can't give specific date for confidentiality reasons).

We have had people on the OCUK forums still needing to get the bios flashed on H81 and B85 boards before a G3258 will work so there are still boards out there on incompatible bios versions. The only chipset that is certain to take one without a flash is Z97.

That seems quite surprising considering how the long they've been out but maybe the older boards aren't updated by the manufacturer and they rely on the consumer's to update it.

Not sure if this is helpful, but my MSI Z87I overclocked the G3258 out of the box to 4.4GHz, without a BIOS update.

I'm using a stock cooler at the moment on my set up msi h81m-e33 motherboard, it has no problems occ'ing at 4ghz with pretty decent temps with no voltage changes.
Highest I've had mine is about 4.4 but the temps get a bit high for me.
