    Re: Supermicro Dual CPU motherboard

Well i just came back to it and its rock solid. 10 hours, 35 tests without error.

I guess that pretty conclusively says that the issue was all down to memory incompatibility so Ill get on ebay and stick to the memory listed on the 'tested' section of supermicro's motherboard page. I really would have liked the very low profile stuff so that its possible for me to populate all channels (one of the coolers overhangs the memory)and they don't specifically list any models of this type

Edit: thinking about it actually there are a few BIOS options that I have tweaked also. I will list my settings once Im happy that unRAID is stable.

    Re: Supermicro Dual CPU motherboard

Well I went over to Manchester last night and had set a parity check before I left. I have just got back and everything is still solid. Very happy that everything is stable now.

Is anyone interested in a build-log of the system?

This is the case. Short depth 4U with SAS hotswap bays

Yes, very much so. That's an interesting looking case btw. I take it you've got a rack for it?

Currently it will be sitting in one of the old Ikea media cabinets, which was pretty much exactly correct for 19" hardware, but I will eventually be building something to replace it as its definitely seen better days.

I also have a rack mount PC for my office workstation, but thats actually mounted to a rack pod under my desk like this:

Ill probably put something similar together for my 'server cupboard'.

I work in broadcast so I quite often have 19" hardware to work with which is why I have these kind of things !

I'm following the progress of this build with interest

Also, rack cabinet with rear mounting posts + rails FTW.

Yeah I would love to put it on rails but I dont have the space to have racks that deep, hence why I'm using short depth cases.

A case of installing the most reliable bits of kit at the bottom of the rack I guess

    Welll....the heaviest
Honestly aside from the PC/Servers most of the hardware is shallow and/or not all that heavy. The one in my desk pod is mounted purely by the front wings without anything to support it and its perfectly fine. The short cases obviously help that aswell.

    Re: Supermicro Dual CPU motherboard

Well the new RAM arrived and everything has been running stable for days now.

I have ordered a few new fans that I plan to (mod)mount into the front grille (that I was expecting today ) to try and get a bit of airflow over the harddrives but unfortunately they haven't arrived yet so the build log will have to wait.

Ill start a new dedicated thread and close this one though.

Moral of the story? When using Supermicro motherboards, stick to RAM directly on the tested list. Even just a couple of characters different in the model numbers from the ones they recomend and you can end up being disappointed..... or just buy crucial stuff (not on the list at all), pretty much always works.
