It depends what you'd do with it, and what you could get for it. Presumably, you've already upgraded? If so, what use have you for the old machine, and what could you raise by selling it. Then compare the value of having it spare, to the revenue it'd raise.
I still have machines FAR older than that doing specific jobs, like running legacy hardware. To me, their cash value is peanuts but they do a valuable job. But you won't have the same needs or uses as me.
Personally, I'd leave off the second part of this. Whether it's worth keeping is down entirely to "what will you do with it?". Unless you have a use in mind, it's probably not worth keeping: it'll just sit in a box of parts and in a year's time you'll pull it out and think "hmmm, I wonder if it's worth keeping this...?" all over again.Originally Posted by Saracen

That's quite a heavy spec for a basic file-server. I don't know if you've ever put a power meter on it, but I'd bet the power draw, and 'leccy cost, isn't trivial.
A better bet for a file server might be a simple (£100-ish) NAS, and a chunky hard drive or two.
Do you even need a fileserver? If this is replacing your current only PC, why not just stick a big HD in it, and a big external HD for backup, etc?
I have, at last count, 14 PCs here and, though by no means are they all turned on at once, my fileserver is an old Pentium dual P550 system, with 512MB of RAM (and a pretty quick 6-disk UltraSCSI RAID 5 disk system) and it copes with my fileserver needs.
Do you need a fileserver, or is it just a case of thinking of some use to put the old machine to? Bear in mind, once you get your new machine, do you want to keep powering up the old one, just to get at files?
I agree, it seems a bit over kill for just a file server, however what about a combo file server and a media centre? I would try and sell it if I seriously have no use for it. Some people might want to buy the components separately rather than as a bundle, such as they may want that part only.. Put it up also separately and see what happens (if you're going to sell it). RAM I guess would be the most difficult to offload solo, so maybe offer it with the mobo for a discounted price if purchased along with it.
It'd very likely be easier to sell the bits. I might even be interested in the memory.
The risk, though, is that you sell some bits, then get stuck with the rest.
We do have a classified section on here, benboy, but I'm afraid you need a bit more of a postcount to qualify for access.
And we require those posts to be useful and constructive. Posting one liners just to boost your post count for (say) Scan rewards may result in those posts being deleted and/or your post count reduced.

Since the QX9650 was the top end 45NM Core2 Quad IIRC,it still is worth some money even today. Looking at the last few months of Ebay listings it seems to sell for between £30 to £100:
