Chipset drivers for z370

Hi all

Have just bought an MSI z370 PC Pro mobo, but I'm having trouble installing chipset drivers. They appear to install OK but, after a reboot, device manager still just shows 'Standard AHCI controller' which surely isn't correct?

I tried extracting the Intel 'SetupChipset' exe to look at the files it contained, and it has files for all previous chipsets (e.g. Kaby Lake, Broadwell, Haswell, etc) but not Coffee Lake. These look to be the newest drivers on MSI's and Intel's sites. Is it possible that dedicated chipset drivers just aren't available for z370 yet, even though boards are available now? Surely not?!

I've emailed MSI tech support but thought I'd try on here too, as you're a clever bunch

Those chipset driver sets should (used to) have some command line options to force install or force update drivers. Run it with /? or -help or something and see if there is a useful command line option that can help.

Thanks - I hadn’t heard of that so ran a /? but they seem to have removed that switch in the newer chipset drivers.

I figured out the problem in the end, it was the RST drivers that hadn’t been installed. For some reason they’re not listed on the MSI download page.

Since z370 is essentially z270 with a name change they shouldnt have to even make a separate driver.

OS? I was hoping I'd be able to get away with running z370 on Win 7 Pro but AFAIK the only chipset drivers available only work on Windows 10 – without those, M.2 and the chipset USB Controller won't work.

I've managed to half get around the lack of native USB by installing a W7 driver for the 3rd party ASRock USB 3.1 controller, so I'm running my USB devices off a hub connected to that. Still no-go on the M.2 though.

Frankly disgusted at Microsoft & Intel for the anti-consumer approach they've each taken with Windows 10 & z370 compatibility.

Sticking on W7 for the time being but if I can find a Linux distro which ticks all the right boxes, I'll be jumping ship. Not willing to be held to ransom by Microsoft for an OS I don't want purely because they've arbitrarily decided to force obsolescence.

I stopped using Apple products & services years ago for exactly the same reason.

I'm on Win 10 Pro x64, and I have to say it's running pretty nicely (including my m.2 SSD). I'm a gamer so have little choice but to go down the Win 10/DX12 route, for better or worse.

I do agree with you about the forced obsolesence though. The launch of Kaby Lake has caused no end of pain at work, since our company policy is still Windows 7. We've bought laptops with Win 10 preinstalled which have been a nightmare to downgrade to Win 7.

Could it be windows 10 overwriting them? if you have auto driver updates switched on (they are by default and re enable with updates), Windows 10 will often change drivers without telling you if it thinks it knows best.
