Are high end motherboards worth it? X470

Planning to get a 2700X and have been stuck with choosing a motherboard. I don't upgrade very often so would like something which can last. I would like to overclock though wouldn't go past 1.4v.

Would a cheap X470 like the Gigabyte ultra gaming suffice or should I be looking at spending more? I know the VRMs can probably handle it, but I wouldn't want them getting toasty if it made it more likely to conk out.

I normally buy flagship motherboards but recently feel that I'm just paying for a bunch of features I don't use. For instance, on the Gaming 7 all the fancy RGB lights, WiFi, extra 4 pin power etc. The gaming ultra offers everything I need, but I'm unsure about the VRM quality.

I've tried looking for information but can't really find any for that model. Gigabyte lists it as a 8+3 phase, but would it be a 4 phase doubled? (does it even matter)?

I have been very pleased with my previous Gigabyte motherboards but was just wondering if the VRMs are capable of pushing an overclocked 2700X (1.4v or below) at decent VRM temperatures.

The Gigabyte Gaming Ultra X470 is on sale for around £140 - for me that's a mid-range board! A cheap motherboard would be under £100 Looking at the Gigabyte website it seems like a solid design, but it might be worth waiting for reviews to come out before buying one.

This is an interesting video regarding the components used on the Gigabyte Gaming 7 board - it shows that the power delivery side quite heavy duty. Obviously not applicable to the Gaming Ultra board, however...

Make sure you check out Buildzoid for his motherboard VRM analysis and he is in the video posted by MrJim.

However,it seems overclocking the Ryzen 7 2700X is not really worth it as Precision Boost 2 gets disabled and scores can actually go down.

Speaking of Buildzoid, GamerNexus recently looked at the VRM heatsinks on the Gigabyte board and found there's little difference in temperatures with and without the heatsinks attached, their theory is that MoBo manufactures maybe over-engineering the X470 boards so as to take account of potentially more demanding processors in the future.

Gotta love the return to upgradable motherboards.
