X370 Boards may not support Zen 2 onwards

All it requires is a google search but there are alot of threads talking about it, But i bought my board over ant 400 series board as it was cheaper and was better in terms of vrm. The sources a few months back were very vague so i didn't pay much heed. I also want to not trust the msi support team as I have high doubts they would have acess to such information. Anyone have additional views? Could we end up with AM4+ boards -_-?

I'm not sure they'd call them anything different like AM4+ as they'll probably just refuse to release BIOS updates for older boards and stop production of them.

I'm a bit on the fence with this, if it turns out to be the case, as on the one hand it sucks that motherboard manufactures may not support newer processors in older boards like AMD originally said they should, but on the other it means we maybe getting better quality motherboards.

it looks like they are going with the same excuse that Intel had for their 8th gen boards, The microcode still exists in the chipset. I Just think it is a waste of RnD resource to produce so many new boards.

Re: X370 Boards may not support Zen 2 onwards

I'd hold off on passing any judgement or accusing AMD of anything until they make an announcement, but I highly doubt AMD would go against their word.

You may lose some features that you would get on an X570/B550 motherboard, however, but I personally find that to be fully understandable.

EDIT: I seem to remember PCI-E 4.0 being mentioned as supported by Ryzen 3rd Gen CPUs. I reckon that will likely not be available on 3xx and 4xx boards.

Re: X370 Boards may not support Zen 2 onwards

Exact reason I bought a X370 board was the promise of future CPU support, now it would seem that this will only apply to one generation.

Still let see, they're maybe a pleasant surprise.

Re: X370 Boards may not support Zen 2 onwards

I strongly suspect this is down to the size of BIOS flash rom in some board. They have started removing support for the old Bristol Ridge APUs from some boards to fit support for newer chips in. I bought a 470 board, and checked that it still supported the old APUs so fingers crossed I should be OK but it is still basically predicting the future so there are never any guarantees.

This is actually more relevant to me now though, my 2600X started throwing streams of corrected hardware machine check exceptions under Linux with the occasional sudden reset under Linux and Windows. I sent the chip back to Amazon, they offered me a refund rather than replace (because it shipped from Amazon in Germany not the UK, very odd but their rules apparently) so right now I am running with a cheap 2200G that I bought to make sure it really was the CPU that was at fault. It's a surprisingly capable little chip, which makes me think rather than buying a new 2600X when I get the refund I could just wait for the 3000 series to come out. The only thing the 2200G isn't up to is playing Elite in VR, which was the only thing my old FX8350 wasn't up to either and the original reason for the upgrade but if it's only a few months I can wait.
