Re: X570 vs B550 for new build

Another area of confusion is that although most B550 & X570 ATX motherboards have two x16 PCIE slots, it tends to be only the more expensive ones that have the PCIE switches necessary to divide the PCIE lanes into 2 x 8. For example my X570 Tomahawk only allows the two x16 slots to be configured as one x16 and the other x4. If the motherboard is SLI certified (a bit of a rarity these days), then it must be able to do 2 x 8 lanes. Otherwise it's a case of checking motherboard manuals, or examining motherboard photos to see it the PCIE switches are visible between the two x16 slots.

Oops,I seemed to have missed that. So the question is whether they need a lot of PCI-E 4.0 slots?? I still think having a Ryzen 9 5900X is a better bet,if the OP is looking at a £600~£700 budget for the CPU and motherboard.

Thank you for the detailed replies, much appreciated.

I have gone with the Asus X570 Prime Pro from Amazon Warehouse, they had a "missing manual" boxed for £202. CPU from their "Global US" store at £335. Just waiting for the ram to come back into stock now, I have some 2666 16GB from on old build which I can use until then.

I didn't need PCIe 4 slots in my work build, but given I could only find X470 or X570 boards with enough slots I went for the new one. Just wanting to plug in several PCIe x8 cards is hard, unless you have the budget for Threadripper.

Sounds like some sweet deals. Enjoy your build, do update the thread and let us know how you get on.

It's a bit pricey though at £499. It does beg the question as to why other motherboards aren't also passively cooled...the technology to do it is obviously around, & a heatsink plus a few heat-pipes can't be all that expensive?
The s-variants are not out yet but on their way. I literally put the hexus article link in my post.

Also I think you mean the Aorus Extreme, the x570 Aorus Master (non-s variant) still has a fan. Fantastic board otherwise and would be what I'd buy now if I could go back in time.

One benefit of that board is the native ps2 port. It lets you install win7 off the orig DVD provided you have a ps2 keyboard and mouse. If that's of interest the missing usb3 drivers can be had from here: https://www.win-raid.com/t4960f52-So...t-Systems.html

Yep, you're right. Nice mobo the Extreme, but given the price so it should be.

Re: X570 vs B550 for new build

A quality cooling system and more stable voltage are trademarks of the X570. Most of the Ryzen 3 CPUs are compatible with these boards due to PCIe 4.0 slots. I had used an x570 motherboard with 3950x, and it performs well.
