Unfortunately, it looks to be more of an "Omega man" remake than a straight version of the book.
And it looks to have been in development hell for years.
Despite that, the trailers still looking good though..
It better be good or theres going to be hell from the fans of the book. This is one film that any director/producer/star wants to screw up.
But, saying that, the trailer does look good despite looking like an omega man remake as capn_cornflake says.
I got the 28days later vibe watching the trailer - having not heard or read the books I was totally new to I am legend but the film looks like it's going to be your usual Hollywood thrill.
Still, I like Will Smith and after watching Persuit of Happyness I look forward to seeing him in more movies with serious roles.
At the end of the day as long as they keep the gist of the book and how the "things" are especially with the 2 types then it might not be that bad.
Hmmm, I read the book more or less by chance and thought it was pretty awesome. The trailer has potential for being good, however, look at the last time will smith did a classic sci-fi novel. THey won't make it gory enough to convey the power of the book, and it'll probably be a good action film, but ultimately dissapointing
The book wasn't all that gory really, maybe a couple of parts but nothing to write home about.
The main problem is that it's based in New York and he sleeps in the bath with a gun.
Neville had a typical suburbian house, with fencing and padlocks and a generator that he had to keep repairing day in day out.
Hope they have the experiments in the film that he did in the book but i can't see that happening, or the huge firepits
Now i really want to see it to how much of a hash they've turned it into.
Yeah, gory's probably not the right word, but i doubt we'll see him staking some young woman while she sleeps, and id be surprised if the vampires weren't dehumanised to a large extent, rather than being essentially identical as they were in the book.
I'll reserve judgement, however, if the end is changed as i expect it will be, its frankly a complete farce, and the screenwriter should be shot
edit: thats deliberately a bit sideways, so i dont spoil it for someone if it does turn out well
They better not change the ending, thats the whole point of the book!!!
*readies pitchfork and burning torch*
Saw the trailer and managed to track down Omega Man (1973) as well as The Last Man On Earth (1964) - both have got some very wierd aspects to do with explaining how the human race dies etc, and i hope to hell they come up with something more realisticly portrayed in the new one.
I thought that 28 days later was brill, and although (to my knowledge) not directly based on this story, it's certainly the same theme (as is Day of The Triffids really).
Omega Man has a very strong start and looks like it's going to have a sort of 'Planet of the Apes' feel to it (not least due to Heston who, although a right-wing plonker remains a great actor) but then it goes all stoopid. Now i know where all that Treehouse of horror stuff comes from.
Anyway, I am Legend looks solid, so i'm going to go see it
Watched the trailer after reading nick's post in this very thread, 10mins later i'd bought the book of play.com (damn them for taking ages to send it) the film to me looks really good but from the trailer i can see it seems a lot different from the book, much more hunting (but that could just be to get people into the cinema) I've not finished the book yet (on chapter 17) so can't comment on anything like the ending but there is one thing i can say for this film is that at least i will have got to read a great book.
