    I'm looking forward to both.

Susan Cooper was one of my favourite authors as a kid, but I'm scared of reading her now and spoiling my memories. HDM on the other hand has a lot more depth, which probably won't make it onto screen. I doubt they'll have the courage to portray the atheism that is central to it.

    Re: The Dark is Rising.....

Loved the books as a kid, but doubt the movie will stay true to them in any way.....certainly the trailer didn't ring a lot of bells. What's the odds it's a flimsy Hollywood ripoff?

    Re: The Dark is Rising.....

Just seen the advert on TV, so I hit IMDB all ecited about it... seent he trailer and now I'm totally dissappointed.

They've Americanised a classic that took so much of it;s thrall and magic from the fact it was rooted in Old English folklore and mythology...

I was seriously excited as The Dark is Rising series is probably one of the best fantasy/mythology reads you'll ever lay hands on, and here it is buggered up by short of ideas big time studios.

Why oh why didn;t they have the guts to tay true to the books? Set and base it all in the UK, in BUcks.... there's some of the most beautiful countryside you'll ever see out there and it fits the books perfectly... but no, it's all hotdogs, popcorn and typical American bullishness.

Yep, I'm judging the film based on just the trailer but from that alone I've seen enough to know that they've ballsed it up.

There won't be another film in the series and I doubt now that it'll ever get a faithful recreation in film... cheers Cunningham... nice job.

    Re: The Dark is Rising.....

If you can get passed the transplanting of an American family into the UK countryside (somewhere near Slough or Rickmansworth as far as I can tell from the roadsigns...) then the rest of the film stays pretty faithful to the books with the exception of one major plot line that has obviously been created for the American market.

It's not amazing, but it's watchable enough when sod all else is on.

    Re: The Dark is Rising.....

It's terrible when compared to the books. As a standalone kids action movie, it's nothing special - just about watchable. I like Christopher Eccleston as an actor, but found him mostly insubstantial in his role.
