Probably old news, but I've only just seen it! Ian McKellen to play Gandalf in The Hobbit :)

It's a great shame that Peter Jackson won't be directing, but fingers crossed it will be on a par with LOTR, especially with the same Gandalf :)
Looking forward to The Hobbit either way (although rather a long wait!)
Think it was only announced a day or so ago, so its not old news :) It will be great seeing him back in the role of Gandalf. As for the director, like most fans of the LOTR movies we all would have preferred to see Jackson directing again. But Guillermo del Toro is a great substitute. Roll on 2010 & 2011 :D

Heard this a couple of days ago. Andy Serkis is pretty much a certainty to be back as Gollum as well, with Weta doing the effects :). As for Jackson, I think he will be involved in some way or another. The 'bridge' film has a lot of interesting stuff they can draw on as well.
Peter Jackson might not be directing it, but he is involved in the production.

Glad they've finally settled the differences (though last I heard the Tolkien estate were suing New Line for getting no royalties whatsoever!)

I though pans laberynth was amazing so hopefully he can do the hobbit justice. Of more interest IMo is the other film which will span the time between the end of the hobbit and LOTR I dond know what they will do in that down because I dont think Bilbo or frodo got up to any big adventures. Maybe it will be about shire life :D
Honestly, in LotR I always skip the bits with Hobbits (particularly once Sam and Frodo are out and about) and also, all the bloody songs. :D
